President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia has spoken out strongly against xenophobia and Afrophobia in South Africa, saying that South Africans do not have to kill fellow Africans to resolve labour-related issues. President Hichilema reminded South Africans of the sacrifices Zambia made during the struggle against apartheid, arguing that bridges and other infrastructure in Zambia were bombed by the apartheid regime while the Zambian government was supporting Umkhonto weSizwe and the African National Congress in their fight for liberation. Zambia paid a heavy price for that solidarity because it believed in African brotherhood and the liberation of fellow Africans. He argued that this spirit of African brotherhood should not disappear today because of what he described as a xenophobic mentality that has gripped parts of South Africa. President Hichilema said what is happening in South Africa is wrong and unacceptable, stressing that legitimate concerns about jobs, labour and immigration cannot justify violence against fellow Africans.
