The situation in northern Ethiopia 🇪🇹 is rapidly worsening, with ENDF mobilizing massive reinforcements to Tigray, while Amhara Fano soldiers are taking over their region. 2 weeks after fighting erupted between federal forces and TPLF/TDF in Tigray, the Ethiopian government is in the process of mobilizing thousands of soldiers in the north. Abiy Ahmed has been preparing for war with Tigray and Eritrea for months, while part of his army is stuck fighting in the vast Amhara region, as you can see on the map (from Thomas van Linge). We recently learned about additional regional implications, with Ethiopia hosting a Rapid Support Forces base, while Sudan is training and hosting TPLF forces in Qadarif state and Somali rebels in Somalia. In northern Ethiopia, a climate of war is settling, with both TPLF, Eritrea and ENDF mobilizing their forces. At the same time, ENDF are leaving large areas of Amhara regions, which are rapidly falling into AFNM control. The Amhara Fano forces do not control any city yet but are threatening the main garrisons in the region, while a war in the north could allow them to walk on Addis Abeba.

A large convoy of Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) T-55 tanks has reportedly been seen heading towards the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia 🇪🇹. The ENDF appears to be massing troops and military equipment in the area on a scale not seen since the 2020–2022 conflict.

🤡 Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it struck “military targets” in Ukraine Meanwhile, the following sites in Kyiv were damaged: — Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry building (for the first time since World War II), — the Chornobyl Museum, — the Podil Opera and Ballet Theater, — the Kyiv School of Economics, — the Institute of Religious Sciences, — the tax service headquarters, — a market, residential buildings, and other civilian infrastructure. Moscow called all of this “retaliation for Ukraine’s terrorist attacks.”

Significant damage was caused to northern Israeli communities following Hezbollah’s attacks against Israelis on Oct. 8, 2023. As part of efforts to create the conditions for the return of the northern residents to their homes, the IDF is conducting a wide-range operation to restore and clear up communities in northern Israel. Soldiers are currently deployed across more than 40 communities in northern Israel and in civilian areas that were used as military assembly areas. The Home Front and the Logistics Units of the Northern Command, in coordination with their civilian counterparts and in close cooperation with local authorities, have been working for over a year to establish conditions for the safe return of northern residents to their homes.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz Friedrich Merz: "The recent heavy Russian attacks on Kyiv and other cities are once again attacks on the civilian population. These are the most serious war crimes. Not military targets, but terror against the civilian population. Russia has deliberately and ruthlessly attacked the civilian population with numerous drones and cruise missiles. This was anything but a proportionate response to the very precise Ukrainian strikes against military air bases and infrastructure last week."

Rumor has it, Abiy Ahmed Ali 🇪🇹 is expected to launch an all out war against TPLF and Eritrea, following the African Union Summit, which concludes on February 16. The recent large-scale ENDF offensive in North Shewa and Wollo Zones of Amhara region, accompanied by a complete communications blackout, appears to be aimed at weakening Fano in order to prevent it from advancing toward Addis Ababa once a new northern war begins. So far the offensive has not been successful with ENDF facing heavy losses, with large scale civilian massacres reported in retaliation for these losses. At the same time, ENDF has been observed redeploying troops and heavy weaponry from South Gonder and other parts of the Amhara region toward Tigray. ENDF forces have reportedly been withdrawn from 13 of the 18 woredas in South Gonder, including Hamusit, Ibnat, Meketewa, Arb Gebeya, Welela Behar, Aja, Ayisa, Muja, and Wegeda, and shifted northward. TPLF has also been seen moving troops and heavy weapons toward Welkait and Telemt from Sudan, Shiraro, and Dedebit. A sizable force, along with logistics and heavy weaponry, has also been deployed yesterday in Maychew and Mehoni along the Raya front, signaling preparations for another offensive. The latest statement by Ethiopian FM Gedion Timothewos Hessebon further reinforces the likelihood of escalation, suggesting that the question is no longer if a war with Eritrea will occur, but when. And when the war eventually breaks out, Abiy is expected to point to this letter as evidence that he pursued every available peaceful option, framing the war as a last resort imposed upon him.

In Oromia, the front lines of the civil war are no longer confined to the remote areas of Wallaga and Guji, but have moved to East Shewa, a zone at the very center of both the region and the country. One of these videos shows the graduation of thousands of militia trained to fill the vacuum created by the departure of ENDF forces. The other video was recorded and posted by locals as ENDF gunships fired on rebel positions in Dugda Woreda this past week. Dugda is located about 60 km from Adama.
