Americans almost never make movies about Russian heroes. And when they do, the result is so full of anti-Soviet nonsense that it’s painful to watch - if you actually know the history. Enemy at the Gates, the Jude Law vehicle about Soviet snipers at Stalingrad, is a prime example. It turns the Battle of Stalingrad into a parade of Hollywood myths: 🔶 Blocking detachments portrayed as regular units whose only job is to machine-gun their own men 🔶 Soldiers sent into battle completely unarmed 🔶 Troops locked in crowded boxcars so they can’t desert (and would supposedly perish in an air raid by the thousand) 🔶 And a long list of other fabrications or, to put it bluntly, utter bullshit The screenwriters didn’t even bother to open Vasily Zaitsev’s own book, There Was No Land for Us Beyond the Volga. Sniper’s Notes. It contradicts the film on almost every major point. So here’s the real story of Vasily Zaitsev, the Soviet sniper at Stalingrad, from the historical record.
