This is what flying through a hailstorm looks like from an Airbus A320 cabin over Paraguay in an absolute emergency. There are five ways pilots can tackle a thunderstorm while airborne: 1. Fly around 2. Fly over 3. Divert 4. Fly under 5. Fly through In that order. Flying under and flying through are both dangerous options, although flying under can be slightly safer depending on the storm. Jet engines are actually tested and certified for hailstone ingestion. A V1 cut is an engine failure after V1 (takeoff decision speed). It means we’re past the point where a rejected takeoff is safe or possible, therefore we must take-off on the remaining good engine. All pilots practice V1 cuts on large multiengine aircraft, but usually in a simulator. We do it as part of every recurrent Checkride on the big jets, but it’s extra trippy doing it for real! That said, the “failure” is really just one engine being pulled back to idle thrust, so it’s available IF necessary. Notice - it’s barely even an event in the hands of a skilled professional pilot. Rudder is applied to the side of the good engine, directional control is maintained, and the aircraft is rotated into a climb at V2 while the non-flying pilot retracts the gear and the flaps. The “issue” and subsequent troubleshooting/shutdown procedures are delayed until the aircraft is at a safe altitude.

Following the Delta A330-323(N813NW) engine failure after departure from São Paulo (GRU), many are asking: what actually happens if an airliner loses an engine just after takeoff? As passenger in the cabin watching this scenario unfold, the panic is understandable. Seeing flames from an engine is alarming. But this is exactly the kind of scenario pilots are trained for repeatedly in simulators. Modern multi-engine aircraft are designed to fly safely on one engine. In fact, losing one engine is a certification requirement during testing. Here’s what happens: At liftoff, pilots target V2 speed—the minimum safe speed that guarantees the aircraft can continue climbing even with one engine inoperative. If an engine fails: • The MASTER FIRE warning light will illuminate in the cockpit and the fire warning bell will sound, alerting the pilots on the affected engine (they will close the fuel, hydraulic shutoff, and engine bleed air valves, and also discharge the related fire bottle to extinguish the engine fire). Of course, they will be careful NOT TO shut down the wrong engine (this has happened before). • Maximum thrust is applied on the remaining engine. • Rudder input keeps the aircraft straight (countering asymmetric thrust) • The aircraft climbs straight ahead for best performance (turns reduce climb rate unless required) Once above a safe altitude (typically ~1,500 ft / Minimum Flap Retraction Altitude(MFRA): • The aircraft accelerates • Flaps are retracted (“cleaning up”) • Crew assesses the situation and plans a return or diversion Even at very low altitude, the aircraft remains controllable by design. It may not climb aggressively, but it will climb. Bottom line: What looks catastrophic from the cabin is a scenario pilots are highly trained to handle—and aircraft are engineered to withstand. Geopolitical analyst Brandon Weichert says Trump has invested too much politically to walk away without extracting major concessions from Iran. Iran, meanwhile, believes time is on its side. It sees rising energy prices, pressure on U.S weapons stockpiles and growing regional instability as leverage. Neither side wants to blink first, and that's where the real danger begins. Brandon argues that if America can no longer sustain a prolonged long-range missile campaign, the Pentagon's answer won't necessarily be restraint; it may be escalation. Instead of striking safely from a distance, U.S aircraft could be forced to operate closer to Iranian territory in an effort to destroy missile launchers, underground facilities and command networks, but there's a problem. Nobody can say with confidence they know where all of Iran's launch sites are, and no one can guarantee they can eliminate them. Every mile American aircraft move closer increases the danger to U.S pilots. That's what makes China's reported shipment of hundreds of portable air-defence systems to Iran so significant. Those weapons matter far less when American aircraft are launching from long range, but they matter a whole lot more if U.S jets are forced to fly lower and closer to their targets. Brandon's warning is that Washington may soon find itself trapped between two options: Accept a strategic setback... Or escalate into a much larger war using fewer long-range weapons, more exposed aircraft and no clear path to eliminating Iran's ability to fight back. End-to-end neural networks racing drones in Abu Dhabi! 🚁 Check out the drone racing team from Delft University of Technology! A completely end-to-end neural network solution, from pixels to direct motor commands. No Kalman filters. No computer vision feature detectors. Just neurons flying the drone. The challenge is extreme. These drones fly at high speeds and need split-second decisions with minimal onboard resources: a single rolling-shutter camera and an IMU. Their approach is called SkyDreamer, based on the Dreamer-v3 reinforcement learning algorithm. First, a world model is trained in simulation. Then, the neural network learns how to fly in its dreams through reinforcement learning. The network's internal state can be read out to see where it thinks it is on the track or how fast it's going. Even better, the drone estimates some of its own body characteristics during flight, like the camera angle relative to the body, eliminating time-consuming manual calibration. The Dallas Police Department’s new Drone as First Responder program officially launched today with eight remotely piloted drones based at Dallas Fire-Rescue stations across the City of Dallas. These drones are operated out of the Fusion/Real Time Crime Center and are designed to respond to calls for service in a two-mile radius from their base station. The base locations were selected based on heat maps of calls for service for both police and fire, placing them where they can potentially respond to the greatest number of calls. The pilots will be able to get to the scene quicker than in a squad car and begin to provide real-time intelligence and feedback to officers, as well as reduce the level of response or clear a call entirely if the incident has resolved. If a pilot sees a call in a drone’s response area where aerial intelligence can enhance officer safety, they can deploy a drone to provide critical updates to officers at the scene. Each drone is equipped with a thermal camera to help during nighttime operations, as well as a loudspeaker to make announcements to individuals on the ground. “I challenged our team to find innovative ways to continue improving our response times, and this new drone unit will not only keep officers free to respond to more calls, but provide real time updates as they are responding to calls,” said Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. “Even during our training, our pilots were able to clear three holding calls in an hour with one drone. That alone proved their value to us, and I’m looking forward to seeing the benefits in both officer safety and response times.” Our public safety partners at Dallas Fire-Rescue will also be utilizing the Drone as First Responder program, with training for pilots underway. Under the new program, in the event of a reported structure fire, a drone will be dispatched to the scene ahead of arriving apparatus. Pilot sounds alarm over Transport Canada’s sweeping new medical privacy mandate ✈️ Tamara Ugolini 🇨🇦 Not only does the policy represent a sweeping infringement on personal privacy, but its rollout was rushed and secretive, done without consultation or meaningful notice. On December 9, Transport Canada quietly introduced a new mandatory privacy notice and declaration tied to pilot medical examinations, then made it effective the very next day. With no advance warning or stakeholder consultation, roughly 60,000 licensed pilots across Canada were suddenly required to consent to the collection and review of their most sensitive personal health data or risk losing their medical certification; with it, their ability to fly. One commercial pilot says the scope and coercive nature of the policy raise serious privacy and civil liberty concerns that extend far beyond aviation. “There was no lead time. There didn’t appear to be any stakeholder consultation,” he said. “Our union was very surprised by it. Even Transport Canada doctors were surprised—they didn’t know it was coming.” Unlike the previous declaration, described as a short, focused paragraph, the new notice authorizes access to an expansive range of medical information. This includes laboratory results, pharmacy records, and entire medical record systems, without clear limits on timeframe or scope. “It says ‘including but not limited to’ and then proceeds to list everything I can personally think of when it comes to medical health,” the pilot explained. “There’s no start date. There’s no end date. And it authorizes Transport Canada to collect information from third parties, which also aren’t defined.” The implications are largely unprecedented. It means that theoretically, anyone, past or future, could access a pilot’s entire medical history. Since health data cannot be reset like a credit card, its value on the black market is staggering. The partially anonymous pilot stresses that his objections are not about evading medical scrutiny. “We care deeply about fitness to fly and public safety,” he reiterated. “This isn’t about getting out of proper screening. It’s about proportionality, oversight, and consent.” What has further fueled distrust is the timing and method of rollout. It was done during the Christmas season, when there is limited staffing at both Transport Canada and pilot unions, and was buried in dense, fine-print government documentation. “If you don’t sign it, your medical is discontinued,” the pilot said. “You don’t get stamped. You don’t fly, anywhere in Canada. That’s coercive pressure when your livelihood is on the line.” Transport Canada has since circulated a revised privacy notice, narrowing third-party access and softening language around suspensions. However, pilots organizing through argue the revisions still leave the door open to unacceptable data overreach. Federal MP Dan Albas has formally called for the policy to be suspended pending a full privacy review, citing both the lack of consultation and the magnitude of the data being demanded.
