Wow, memories unlocked. This song is one I could listen to on repeat. That soaring motif that never resolves is so haunting. This video was in heavy rotation back when MTV was actually music television.

On February 5, 1990, Depeche Mode released "Enjoy the Silence", the best-selling single of their career and a massive worldwide hit. 🤔 Fun fact: The song was originally written by composer Martin Gore as a slow, minimalist ballad, sung by himself with just a harmonium or basic pad. It was member Alan Wilder who had the radical idea, along with producer Flood, to speed up the tempo and turn it into a dance-oriented pop track. Gore initially opposed it, thinking it went against the lyrics, but when they added the guitar and Dave Gahan's vocals, they knew they had a hit on their hands!. Did you know? 🤯

This song was so ahead of its time; Looking back, it made that it was released. You had mainstream hits the likes of Vanilla Ice, C+C Music Factory, EMF; glam rock was fading, grunge was about to happen....this song made no sense...and yet it's is f-ing awesome!
