I've always been curious as it's not uncommon but why not use more general engines to make this sort of game? What does RPG Maker offer to those who want to make completely different games? Why say "I want to learn RPG Maker" as opposed to another engine?

Good question. I am not encouraging everyone to learn RM here, it is just my case. RM gives me the possibility to make a 2d sidescroll game in one year. To find the right tool to achieve your goal and just do it. That is what I meant.
