Our people, it’s high time we had a serious conversation about how our society speaks to and treats the girl child. It’s high time we talked about what kind of culture and what kind of society we want to be. There is no greater sign of civilization than how a society treats its women. If our girls are not safe in our streets, not safe online, and not safe at home then we cannot claim to be a civilized society. Tomorrow, when someone starts to preach a contrary message to our women and girls, the only reason they may find an opportunity is because we as a society have first laid the foundation through our actions or inactions. Our girls should be proud and safe in our streets. We are better than this and it is our responsibility to set a better example for our young men and young women. And there are all these other victims that came subsequent to Maria's reporting in 1996. We let them down because somebody like Epstein being out of custody and others that were perpetrators, there's the very real possibility we might not have had this many victims and survivors.
