Jesus drove the money changers and animal sellers out of the Temple courts and overturned their tables. All four Gospels record it. They exchanged foreign coins for the Tyrian shekels required to pay the Temple tax and sold animals for sacrifice. Jesus called it a den of robbers because they had turned a house of prayer into a marketplace. The Greek word for those tables is trapeza. It literally meant a four-legged table, but it was also the standard word for a money-changer’s counter. In that sense trapeza already meant “bank.” The same word is used in Luke 19:23, where it is translated “bank.” These money changers, together with the Temple treasury, were the main banking operation in first-century Jewish life. The Temple collected the half-shekel tax from Jews across the empire and held large deposits. In that setting they were the closest equivalent to organized bankers that existed. After the incident the chief priests and scribes began looking for a way to kill Jesus. The high-priestly families who controlled the Temple markets had a financial interest in the system. Jesus was then handed over to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate and crucified by Roman soldiers.
