The fact that this is even necessary is proof of the abysmal failure that is the Texas grid. It is unbelievable how much money we still pay for our monthly “electricity lottery.” Will the power go out today? Who knows! Can ERCOT be trusted? Not at all!

The demand for energy across all of Texas is outpacing the state’s generation capacity. In load shed events, all ERCOT members must participate in rolling power outages. I want to be very clear that this is a statewide issue and not a result of generation issues with CPS Energy.

This year, renewables and storage covered 100% of Texas’ demand growth. Through July, ERCOT consumption rose ~17 terawatt-hours compared to last year. And nearly all of that incremental demand was met by clean generation. Through July of this year: ⚡ Solar is up ~47% year, adding 12 TWh ⚡ Wind added 3 TWh ⚡ Storage tripled to 3 TWh Gas still provides a large share of ERCOT’s power and remains an important part of the grid. But the growth in demand this year, the extra electricity Texans are using, has been supplied almost entirely by renewables and storage. That extra supply matters for affordability. Prices are rising due to higher fuel and transmission & distribution costs, but renewables and storage are holding them down compared to where they would be otherwise. This analysis comes from my special quarterly presentation, a deep dive into the latest trends in Texas energy and power. The takeaway: Texas’ growth story is increasingly being powered by renewables and storage.
