The year ends on a heartwarming note for us at TN Forest Department, as our Foresters united a lost baby elephant with her mother and the herd after rescue in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve at Pollachi. The little calf was found searching for the mother when field teams spotted her. With the help of drones & experienced forest watchers the herd was located and the tiny calf was safely reunited. Teams are still on ground for monitoring. There's a reason the Keepers called Korbessa “our little frog”. Whether she’s lounging in the bush or lazing in the mud bath, she likes to sit with her legs splayed out. It’s not a position usually preferred by elephants – but Korbessa is no ordinary elephant! Rescued from a well near Meru National Park in 2023, she arrived tiny but full of character and immediately established herself as Kaluku's undisputed mini-matriarch. We will care for her until she is ready to reclaim her place in the wild – a process that takes upwards of a decade. We could not believe our eyes when we saw Alia in the middle of the mud bath last month. She arrived at the Nursery in October 2025, withdrawn and slow to approach the herd. She watched the others from the edges – feeding, putting weight back on, working out who was who. Mud baths happened around her, not with her. And then, the Keepers found her trunk-deep in one, alongside Mzinga, Muridjo and Olomunyak, getting comprehensively coated. A step in the right direction, wouldn't you agree?

In 2014, 3-year-old Karina Chikitova miraculously survived 11 days in the Siberian forest, which was teeming with bears and wolves, with only her dog for companionship. She sustained herself by consuming wild berries and drinking from a river, while seeking warmth by curling up next to her faithful pet dog. Eventually, her canine companion returned to her village and led rescuers to her location. The footage below shows the moment the search team finally found her.

Case in point: each morning our mini-matriarch checks on the youngest orphans in their stables before the herd heads out. In June she kept our newest rescue, tiny Zuri, back from the mud wallow, standing guard at its edge – and when Pardamat knocked the little one over, Muridjo drove him off and his time-out lasted hours. Adopting Muridjo supports her care and the little herd she keeps in order:

When Kaikai arrived for her midday wallow, she stepped straight into one of them. All four of her tiny feet fit inside a single print. One day, she will leave footprints like that herself. Right now, she is less than a year old, rescued from the Maasai Mara in May 2025 after her mother died of natural causes. She arrived hungry and frightened, a week-old calf with no one to nurse from. She arrived at Kaluku, found her Keepers, and decided — fairly quickly — that she was the centre of the universe.
