BURKINABE HONOUR SANKARA’S LEGACY On Tuesday, it was the 37th anniversary of Thomas Sankara's assassination. That may seem a long tome ago, but the people of Burkina Faso still come out in large numbers every year in the capital Ouagadougou to remember him. At this year’s event, government officials, ambassadors and members of civil-society came together to pay tribute to his life and legacy. They gathered at the Thomas Sankara Memorial - the site of his assassination. African Stream was also there - speaking to Burkinabe about the significance of the ceremony within the context of the newly formed Alliance of Sahel States (AES). The AES is a pan-African, anti-imperialist confederation seeking to unify Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. It’s a project that’s very much in line with Sankara’s vision for his homeland and Africa. Today, his life and legacy are more important than ever as the current president of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traoré, works to put the country back on a 'Sankarist' path. While Sankara only spent four years in power in Burkina Faso, he transformed the country through literacy campaigns, public-health drives, environmental projects, infrastructure development, food sovereignty, increased power for women and more. He is believed to have been murdered by his right-hand man Blaise Compaoré, who was found guilty of his assassination by a Burkinabe court in 2022. Many also believe that the CIA and France were involved in the plot. Compaoré ruled over Burkina Faso for 27 years after Sankara's death until he was overthrown in a popular insurrection in 2014.

When are we going to organise a day of rage in our continent, march to the US and French Embassy, make them realise we are no longer the African of 1966 or the African of 2011. When are we going to see the attack on Traore, not just an attack on Burkina Faso but an attack on the entire African continent and people, and collectively fight it as a unit.

UMUCHIGBO, ENUGU: Burkina Faso (NPC) cultists have k!lled two NBM (Aye) cultists, including a former Aye number 1 man (Kpoi). The victims have been identified as TBag and Target — with Target confirmed to be a former Aye number 1 man at IMT, Enugu. The attack took place amid an ongoing community dispute in the area which involves Aye (NBM), Vikings (DNKI), and Burkina Faso (NPC) in the various communities. (Video on TG). Burkina Faso's Faso7 TV recently broadcast these breathtaking visuals of Thomas Sankara Boulevard in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, showing how it looked before and after its renovation under the Faso Mébo Initiative. The initiative – whose name means “Build the Country” – was launched in October 2024, and has drawn volunteers from across all ages and classes in Burkina Faso, as well as donors and volunteers from across Africa, its diaspora, and even allied nations, who have freely given their resources, time and labor towards the singular goal of rebuilding Burkina Faso in the image of its people. From road construction, to urban beautification, to nature restoration, the transformations have been as rapid as they have been inspiring. Now running for over a year, Faso Mébo shows no signs of slowing down, and is a powerful example of the evident reality that infrastructural development in Africa can be internally funded and executed, and can completely sidestep the problems and bottlenecks caused by scarce external funding and expensive foreign expertise. Motorcycles are freely plying the seat of power. Roads are dusty. But Captain Traore the junta leader of the country is constructing roads. The international airport of the country is below the standard of all the local airports in Nigeria. In fact, the airport is a motor park. I have never seen that kind of poor airport anywhere in Africa. However, the people are humane and helping. I'm having language barrier as the country is French-speaking. I visited the Embassy of Nigeria. I eat food at 042 Kitchen. I met Ebonyians there. An Ezeagu, Enugu man told me that Ebonyi people are more in number among the Igbo inhabitants of the city, and doing quite well for that matter. I met an Izzi man and an Agba man. They're doing well. Most Ebonyians in Burkina Faso are doing quite well in their businesses. Egypt is the next." ~NCN
