What if you could run ESP32 firmware without touching a physical board? Espressif's open-source ESP Emulator lets you run firmware binaries for chips including the ESP32-C3, C6, H2, P4, S3, and S31. You can even try it in your browser. Upload a merged firmware ".bin" file and watch the emulator run, with a live view of the console, CPU registers, memory and GPIO activity. For embedded developers, this opens up new ways to test firmware, debug execution and experiment before moving to hardware. TinyGS turns low-cost ESP32 and LoRa hardware into a ground station that can receive packets from LoRa satellites, weather probes and other compatible flying objects. You can build a station with boards like Heltec LoRa, TTGO LoRa32, T-Beam or even an ESP32 with an SX126x or SX127x module. ESP32-S3 boards are supported too. Once running, your station can automatically tune for satellite passes and send received data to the TinyGS network, where you can see stations, satellites and received packets from the community. It is a great way to learn ESP32, LoRa, RF, satellite tracking and ground-station technology with relatively inexpensive hardware. Would you build a tiny satellite ground station? It also includes an onboard IMU for balance and motion sensing, wireless connectivity, expansion interfaces and audio features. The BiBoard V1 adds features such as a voice command module, speaker and Raspberry Pi support. What makes it especially interesting is the software ecosystem. The board works with Petoi's open-source OpenCat framework, giving developers a solid starting point for building quadruped robots instead of creating everything from scratch. This uses an ESP32 with an SX1278-based LoRa module to build a simple point-to-point text communication system. The LoRa link runs at 433 MHz using Chirp Spread Spectrum. The receiver displays messages on a 16×2 LCD, while the ESP32 can also send data to ThingSpeak over Wi-Fi. In urban testing, the link remained usable up to roughly 1 km. No gateway. No cellular network. Just two small nodes talking directly. Now imagine putting these nodes on robots, sensors, or remote stations. What would you build if you had a 1 km wireless link with no infrastructure?

Every time I think the ESP32-S3 has hit its limit, someone finds another gear. This open-source Jet renderer is now pushing the S3 even harder. Real-time screen-space reflections, water ripple distortion, lens flare and 8 ships on screen, all running on a tiny MCU. Performance dropped from around 60 FPS to 45–50 FPS, but that's still wild for an ESP32-S3. And the developer thinks there is more performance left to squeeze out. No GPU. No desktop CPU. Just an ESP32-S3 doing real-time 3D graphics.

Spent $20 on a tiny 1.5" ESP32-S3 TFT LCD board, plugged it in, and Claude basically knew the whole chip immediately. Now it's running a falling-sand sim with gusty wind, curated color palettes, and a different personality every boot — at 91 fps. 🏜️
