Elon Musk on why physics is the only law you can't break "Physics is the law, and everything else is a recommendation. I've met a lot of people who can break the law, but I haven't met anyone who could break physics" "For any kind of technology problem, you have to make sure you're not violating physics. First-principles analysis can be applied to really any walk of life" "It's really just saying, let's boil something down to the most fundamental principles, the things we are most confident are true at a foundational level. That sets your axiomatic base, and then you reason up from there"

Elon Musk on first principles. "A good framework for thinking is physics… first principles reasoning." "Boil things down to their fundamental truths and reason up from there, as opposed to reasoning by analogy." Most of life runs on analogy — copy what others do with slight variations, because that's how you get through the day. New work can't. If the answer isn't already on the shelf, you have to drop to physics: what's actually true, then build up. • Analogy = copy + tweak • First principles = fundamental truths, then reason up • Something new → physics approach "But when you want to do something new, you have to apply the physics approach."

ELON: I STRONGLY RECOMMEND STUDYING PHYSICS “I studied physics and I certainly strongly recommend physics as a good grounding to understand the nature of reality. Physics is fundamentally just understanding how the universe actually works. And then that's a good foundation for then a variety of engineering disciplines. I think also the analytical principles, the sort of analytical constructs used in physics apply to basically anything. Physics developed all these ways of thinking, like first-principles thinking, thinking about things in the limit, high and low, testing your hypothesis. It's the scientific principle, essentially. These things are incredibly helpful in all arenas.” Source: Axel Springer Pioneer's Talk, December 2020

Elon Musk explains why AI could be capable of discovering new physics. “You can think of intelligence like a compression problem. For any given field, it can be physics, or any field, you can distill things down to their most basic axiomatic elements, the things that are extremely likely to be true. And then, you can reason up from there to reach a cogent conclusion. I think if you apply that sort of first-principles compression to a field, and then you decompress it and contest the results against reality, then AI is capable of innovation and discovering new physics.” Town Hall in Philadelphia, October 18, 2024

Elon Musk: I strongly recommend studying physics as a grounding to understand reality. “I studied physics, and I certainly strongly recommend physics as a good grounding to understand the nature of reality. Physics is fundamentally just understanding how the universe actually works. That's a good foundation for a variety of engineering disciplines. The analytical constructs used in physics [like first-principles thinking] apply to basically anything. Most people tend to think by analogy or by comparison with something that already exists. This is a mental shortcut that requires less brain strain, but it's hard to get fundamental insights unless you think about things from a first-principles standpoint.” Axel Springer Award, December 1, 2020

CERN pays tribute to Peter Higgs Peter Higgs’ scientific legacy will extend far beyond the scope of current discoveries. The Higgs boson is linked to some of the most intriguing and crucial outstanding questions in fundamental physics. This still quite mysterious particle therefore represents a uniquely promising pathway to physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics.

Elon Musk on why Optimus has to be designed from physics first principles: "The car is a robot with four wheels... and Optimus is intelligent robot with arms and legs." "We have to design every part of the robot from scratch." "There are no actuators that you can buy for really any amount of money that work well for a humanoid robot." "So we have to go back to physics first principles and design all of the actuators from scratch." That's the Optimus moat: not a catalog part, a first-principles machine. Elon Musk
