Sanders: Schumer and I have very fundamental disagreements about where the Democratic party should be, and I am strongly supporting candidates for the senate who are not part of the Democratic establishment, who believe in medicare for all, who are prepared to take on the big money interests and fight for working people. I have a very different vision of where the Democratic party should go. If Schumer steps down, who is going to take his place? The truth is, progressives in the senate are right now—I think there are about 8 or 9 of us. We are pretty much of a minority.

They want to abolish the carceral state, that means basically police forces and prisons. They want to abolish ICE and grant amnesty for all, they do not support any deportations whatsoever. They want to replace the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary that is chosen by and subordinate to Congress. So this would be a total makeover of our constitutional system. They want public ownership of major corporations. They want to defund the Department of War. This is a very radical organization, and you would laugh at a lot of these types of proposals, but you can't really laugh at it anymore because these guys are taking over the Democratic Party. They do not actually see the traditional establishment wing of the Democratic Party as an ally. They see it as an obstacle. A DSA co-chair said, ‘We're using the Democratic Party as a ballot access vehicle, not because we share its goals. We build our own organization, get elected under the Democratic label, caucus with Democrats when it's useful, and push our own agenda from the inside. Mamdani: "We’re not running away from the Democratic Party. We’re going back to what the party used to be. You think about FDR. You think about the New Deal. That’s what the Democratic Party once was. That’s what it could be again.” Mamdani is basically admitting here that he is not a socialist, but a social Democrat like FDR who believes in saving capitalism and rehabilitating the Democratic party. The purpose of the New Deal was not to bring about a socialist economy where workers own the means of production. The purpose of the New Deal was to save capitalism by throwing labor a few crumbs. As the material conditions of the working class continue to decline as a result of capitalism consolidating wealth into fewer and fewer hands, we are entering into a new period of revolutionary potential. Mamdani, AOC, and DSA are funneling this revolutionary energy right back into a Democratic party where it will be used not to bring about socialism, but to once again save capitalism from itself just like FDR did. This will ultimately lead to the working class being stuck inside this vicious system where labor is exploited to generate wealth for corporations and billionaires. A better world is certainly possible, but this requires the people to make a clean break from the two parties that exist to uphold capitalism.
