"Putin's squads" hint that Russians who use VPN will face consequences (in the video, they are killed.). Some context for this video: ◾️Internet shutdowns are becoming increasingly common in Russia: In June 2025, there were 655 Internet shutdowns; In July-August 2025, there were over 5,000 shutdowns. Whole Russian regions are left without Internet, including state, banking services, online payments, taxi orders, etc. etc. Sometimes, the reason given for the shutdown are drone attacks on Russia. ◾️This has already left to a huge outflow of money from the Russian banks - people don't have access to their own accounts during shutdowns, and they need cash to pay for goods and services when cashless payments are not available. Over the summer, Russians withdrew about 700 billion rubles from their banking accounts, further undermining the Russian banking system. ◾️However, Russian authorities promised that state-owned and/or controlled media, propaganda resources and Russian social media will be available during shutdowns. Unlike them, there have already been several shutdowns of YouTube in Russia, for example. ◾️In Russian Kamchatka, the whole region was left without Internet for 48 hours in September. The authorities said it was due to repair works and that critical services would work using satellite connection. ◾️Russian MPs have already made suggestions to make Internet shutdowns a regular occurrence. So far, this has not gone any further, but these ideas are floating around and can be turned into law at any point. ◾️Russia has also introduced its own messenger called MAX. It is developed by the state. Since September, it must be pre-installed on all mobile devices sold in Russia (and users report that it downloads itself on devices they already own, as well). Online state-provided services in Russia now work through confirmation codes via MAX alone. The messenger gathers not just basic personal information about each user but saves text input history even on unsent messages. The developers (aka the Russian state) have access to all chats and calls, and it can only work using a Russian or Belarusian phone number. ◾️Since an increasing number of foreign websites are now blocked in Russia (including Instagram and X, for example), VPNs are becoming more and more popular. A lot of media projects are selling their own VPNs now, promising full access to the Internet and easy use. Now, it seems, Russian authorities have noticed this trend and will take measures to control/block these services.

Where we are now and what can we expect in the coming months within the context of Russia's war in Ukraine: ◾️Ukraine and the world continue to await tensely for the results of the US elections. In the meantime, Ukraine and Russia continue active diplomatic actions to consolidate support for their allies. ◾️ Russia's primary focus is on discrediting Ukraine in the West, dividing our allies, and interfering in the US elections to divide Americans and increase instability. ◾️ During his visit to the US, President Zelensky met with President Biden and had meetings with presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. ◾️ Ukraine continues to destroy Russian military depots and military logistics; Ukraine produces its own drones and other weapons. ◾️ Russia increases its weapons and drones production as much as it can, despite sanctions. It uses weapons supplied by Russian allies - Iran and North Korea. There are reports that production of Russian Shahed drones has exceeded Russian original plans. ◾️ Russia is intensifying its strikes on Ukrainian cities, deliberately targeting apartment blocks, hospitals, and nursing homes. Its main purpose is to cause as much panic as possible, intimidate Ukrainians, and force them to leave their lands and homes. Strikes are unfortunately likely to continue, especially for Sumy and Kharkiv. Zaporizhzhia is now within the range of Russian KAB bombs, so it is likely to be under constant strikes as well. ◾️Despite the lack of "cannon fodder", Putin doesn't dare yet to announce open mobilization in Russia and increases hidden mobilization instead: increases payments for signing army contracts and recruits soldiers from other countries, including countries of Africa. Russia is increasing its presence there at an alarming rate which is very dangerous for this region. ◾️ In the coming month, the Russians will probably try to solve the "Kursk issue" at any cost. The "deadline" is likely set before the US elections at most but a desirable timeline for them is before the BRICS summit in Kazan (22-24 October) - to demonstrate to the BRICS guests that Russia is in control of the situation and is a serious partner. Otherwise, the situation when a part of Russia's territory is under Ukrainian control (when Putin had the intention to capture Ukraine "in three days" almost three years ago), is rather humiliating for Russia. During August and September, Russians have accumulated forces, have reformed and will now try to counterattack our troops. How the situation in Kursk region will develop depends on many factors and on the decisions that AFU leaders will make. ◾️ One of the key elements of these upcoming months are the elections in Moldova and Georgia at the end of October, where the influence of Russia and pro-Russian forces is enormous. ◾️We are likely to hear increased nuclear threats and other escalation rhetoric from Russia. ◾️Ukraine will face further problems due to electricity shortage. ◾️ Due to the escalation in the Middle East and the US elections, Ukraine is fading from the information field, which Russia is actively using, knowing that its crimes against Ukrainian civilians will not make the headlines in the Western media. Accordingly, many people outside Ukraine have the impression that the situation is getting better. But this is not the case at all: the situation is very tough and complicated. And it will continue to get worse. The largest war in Europe since the Second World War continues to rage on. The whole world is waiting for the US elections. The situation of strategic uncertainty will last at least until November. It is crucial to go through this period with a cool head, keeping the focus on Ukraine and showing Russia that the West does not withdraw its support. I'd like to end with a reminder of these Putin's words, which he said in June 2024. Nothing has changed for him: he intends to wage a war until the end. And it must become his own end.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has been increasing its war spending every year. In the 2026 budget, the Kremlin plans to spend 12.93 trillion rubles ($163,4 billion) (almost 30%, a record since the Soviet era) on the war, the army, and weapons purchases. This rapid growth in spending is happening without an adequate revenue base. The Russian economy has rested on three main pillars: energy exports, gold and foreign exchange reserves, and the National Wealth Fund. ◾️ Oil and gas revenues account for about 25% of Russia's budget and are the main source of funding for the war against Ukraine. As of mid-December, prices for Russian Urals crude are at their lowest level since the start of the full-scale war, at just over $40 per barrel. In February 2022, Urals prices were in the range of $80-90 per barrel. ◾️ Russia's National Wealth Fund is rapidly losing liquid assets: from $113.5 billion in 2022 to $51.6 billion in 2025. It was used to finance the budget deficit, especially in 2022-2024. ◾️ Gold and foreign exchange reserves - at the end of November, according to Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service, in order to quickly patch up holes in the budget and support the ruble exchange rate, Russia's Central Bank began selling strategic gold reserves. The sale is taking place on the domestic market. Access to foreign markets is blocked by sanctions. In fact, Russia is "eating through" reserves that for decades were considered untouchable. ◾️ Even the Russian media are now openly writing about the possibility of the Russian economy entering a phase of stagnation. According to experts, the 1% GDP growth projected by the economic development ministry for 2025 will most likely not be achieved. Declines in industrial output have been recorded across all civilian sectors of the Russian economy. According to the latest data, there has even been a decline in production in the military sector, despite government contracts and financial backing from the budget. ◾️ Due to sanctions restrictions, declining international trust, and high risks, Russia has extremely limited access to external loans. There is little reason to expect a rise in energy prices. Therefore, social programs are being cut, payments to contract soldiers are being reduced, and further emissions and tax increases are being implemented. 🔷 From January 1, 2026, the VAT rate will increase from 20% to 22% - the highest level in Russia since 1992. 🔷 A radical tax reform for small businesses has been approved, affecting not only hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs but also millions of their customers. 🔷 A law introducing a "technology levy" has been signed - a tax on equipment and electronics sold in Russian stores. However, even the usually reserved head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, speaks bluntly - due to tariff and VAT increases in early 2026, the Russian economy will experience an acceleration of inflation. "In December, certain companies have already begun adjusting prices with this in mind, but the main impact is yet to come," she said. For now, the Kremlin is doing everything it can to sustain military spending, which it considers a priority. But the Russian economy may not be able to withstand the continuation of the hot phase of the war. Especially if sanctions are tightened further.

War historian Antony Beevor explained in an interview with The Telegraph why Russia commits such atrocities in Ukraine: He argues that Russia has historically developed a belief that conspicuous cruelty is a necessary weapon of war. According to the historian, while Europe went through the Enlightenment and attempted to "civilize" war by creating the Red Cross and similar attitudes. Russia, however, did not embrace this evolution. ◾️ Beevor links modern cruelty not only to army traditions, but also to deeply rooted violence within Russian society. Putin's soldiers, he emphasizes, often become victims of abuse themselves. The historian recalls how, in the 1990s, while working in Russian archives, he learned that "there were up to 5,000 suicides a year" among conscripts in the Soviet Union, and Soviet generals found this funny. Now, Beevor notes, Russian conscripts are killing themselves because they are subjected not only to bullying but also to persecution and torture. The command often approves of this 'tradition' of treating recruits. ◾️ Beevor calls this phenomenon a "knock-on theory of oppression": having experienced violence themselves, soldiers then take it out on the defenseless. This is what happened in Germany in 1945, and it was repeated in all wars in which Soviet and then Russian troops participated. When asked whether cruelty is considered legitimate in Russia, the historian replied that Russians "don't give a damn about legitimacy, to be perfectly honest." ◾️ The war will end someday, and hundreds of thousands of Russian soldiers will return home. What will happen when people accustomed to violence, looting, and murder find themselves among the civilian population? "We've already been hearing anecdotal evidence of appalling crimes being committed," Beevor said. He highlighted the Russian command's inhumane treatment of its own troops: mobile crematoria at the front, the use of convicts in "punishment" units for demining and suicide attacks - all of which are a continuation of old practices. "They've certainly been using the idea of punishment battalions that Stalin actually copied from the Germans," Beevor added. ◾️ The historian warned that if the Kremlin considers its campaign in Ukraine successful, the Baltic states could be the next target. He recalled the lessons of the past: after World War I, the British and French could not believe that anyone would want another war, and therefore underestimated Hitler. "We've seen a similar thing in the 2000s Nobody believed that anyone would want to have another ground war on the European landmass again. [Under Putin], the sheer brutality of the Russian way of war could well be reapplied on the European landmass," Beevor concluded. 📹: Chechen poet Apti Bisultanov on the Russian army, March 2006

Russian propagandist Dugin openly says that Russia needs a mobilization and that Putin must make the decision to go through with it. A new large-scale mobilization campaign in Russia in the fall of 2026 has not yet been announced. However, the likelihood that mobilization will be announced in late September or October is very high. It is clear that the Russian authorities will not announce this in advance so as not to trigger a mass exodus and a decline in loyalty on the eve of the parliamentary elections. If the campaign is being prepared, it will logically be concealed until the administrative system is ready and opportunities to leave the country are as limited as possible. Therefore, it's necessary to see whether Russia's individual actions are coming together into a unified mobilization configuration. ◾️ First, independent Russian media outlets with sources in regional administrations and the military recruitment system report that a new mobilization is being discussed at various levels of government. October (after the State Duma elections) is cited as a possible date. ◾️ Second, Russia is facing an increasingly severe shortage of manpower. Regions are increasing payments to contract soldiers and expanding recruitment among debtors, prisoners, the unemployed, foreigners, and socially vulnerable groups. At the same time, recruitment numbers are declining, while the need for monthly replenishment is estimated at tens of thousands of people. This means that the voluntary-monetary model is approaching its limits. ◾️ Third, military enlistment offices are not just updating their databases. Since the beginning of 2026, reports have been coming in from various regions that mobilization orders are being affixed to military ID cards during summonses, ostensibly for "data update." Such an order predetermines where a person must report on their own once mobilization measures are in effect. ◾️ Fourth, the state has established an e-infrastructure that it did not have in September 2022. A summons is considered served once it is entered into the registry, and a travel ban can take effect as soon as it is uploaded, regardless of whether the citizen has seen it. If a person fails to appear, the system allows for additional restrictions to be imposed. This means that the Kremlin no longer needs to publicly announce a general border closure: it is sufficient to simultaneously enter the required number of people into the registry and forward the data to the border service. ◾️ Fifth, one of the potential ways for circumventing Russian control has already been closed. Belarus has confirmed that Russians prohibited from leaving Russia due to a military summons will not be able to leave Belarusian territory either. Thus, the restriction effectively applies to both countries. ◾️ Sixth, the tightening of border control, consultations with neighboring countries on closing borders to Russians, changes to transport links, and growing interest among Russians in leaving Russia coincide with the worsening of military conscription. ◾️ Seventh, the calendar follows a political logic. Before the election, it is not in the government's interest to stir up widespread anxiety. After the vote, the political cost drops sharply. That is why September may be the final month of administrative preparations, and October - a convenient time for mobilization. The available indicators are sufficient to assess that the risk of a new mobilization this fall is high. It may not be called a mobilization. It could take the form of mass "data update," reservist assemblies, mobilization orders, forced enlistment, regional quotas, or phased travel restrictions. For someone who will ultimately be sent to war, the legal name of the mechanism will not matter. What should those who do not want to participate in the war do: 🔹 Don't wait for an official mobilization announcement. Once a draft notice is entered into the electronic registry, the travel ban may take effect automatically. The moment when mobilization is publicly acknowledged may come only after opportunities to leave the country have effectively been closed off. 🔹 Leave in advance and only via legal routes. Belarus should not be viewed as a way to circumvent Russian restrictions, as the Belarusian border system may enforce Russia's travel bans. 🔹 Don't consider Europe as the primary relocation destination. Russian citizens will face visa restrictions there, stricter checks on the source of funds, banks' refusal to open or maintain accounts, difficulties with money transfers from Russia, and restrictions on transactions with Russian banks, payment and cryptocurrency services. 🔹 Use Central Asia primarily as a quick transit zone. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, or Uzbekistan may be options for an initial departure, temporary stay, and planning the next route. At the same time, these countries should not be considered guaranteed safe havens for deserters, anti-war activists, or people wanted by Russia, due to the cooperation between local law enforcement agencies and Moscow. After the initial departure, potential relocation destinations may include: ▪️ countries in Latin America, specifically Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Mexico, or countries in Central America; ▪️ countries in South and Southeast Asia; ▪️ Türkiye as a temporary transport and relocation hub; ▪️ certain countries in the Middle East, Africa, or the Caribbean; ▪️ other countries where legal entry, long-term stay, study, work, or a residence permit are available. A practical strategy should consist of two stages: first, a quick, legal departure through an accessible country in Central Asia, the Caucasus, Türkiye, or another open route; then, travel to a country in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, or another region where long-term legalization is possible. Waiting for full documentary confirmation of mobilization in this situation means risking that the decision will be confirmed only after it will no longer be possible to cross the border.

New model: your robot can now pack your suitcase 🧳 Xiaomi has released a new robot foundation model. Called Xiaomi-Robotics-1, it is designed to have a robot pick things up and move them around. But first, DEFINITIONS: - Mixture-of-Transformers (MoT): An architecture where separate transformer "experts" (e.g., one for vision-language, one for actions) share a single attention stream, so each modality gets specialized parameters without losing joint reasoning. - Vision-language model (VLM): A model that jointly understands images and text. - Diffusion transformer: A transformer trained to turn noise into structured outputs by iterative denoising, here generating robot actions rather than images. - Action chunks: Short sequences of future actions (e.g., the next ~50 motor commands) predicted in one shot instead of one step at a time. - Flow matching: A faster version of diffusion. The model learns a straight-line velocity field from noise to the target action, so it needs only a few integration steps instead of many denoising ones. Its peculiarity comes from its two stage training: 1. 100,000 hours of video shot through a UMI rig: a handheld 3D-printed gripper with a camera, worn by humans doing ordinary tasks in homes, shops, factories and offices. 2. Adapt to actual robot bodies with ~10,000 hours of real-robot data. It replaces the standard approach of teleoperating a real robot for every hour of training data. Its architecture is a Mixture-of-Transformers pairing a pre-trained Qwen3-VL vision-language model with a diffusion transformer that emits action chunks via flow matching, released in 2.6B, 5.1B and 10.5B parameter variants. However, if you read the entire paper ("Scaling VLA Models with over 100K Hours"), you realize that all of the scaling experiments on 20k hours. Therefore the headline "out-of-the-box success climbing 26% → 75% as pre-training data grows" tops out at 100% of 20k hours! What the full corpus does to that curve is never shown -> and this where things would become interesting! Xiaomi's own conclusion is that model size has stopped mattering and data is the binding constraint. The performance gap among different model sizes are less pronounced than those observed across different data scales. This result suggests that model capacity at the billions-parameter scale may already be sufficient to capture the current dataset's distribution. Which further asks the same question: why not use the 100k video hours? Anyway, I would definitely love to have a couple robots at home that can cooperate to pack my suitcase with items relevant to my next destination:
