"My feeling is this. I'm not pro-immigration. I'm not anti-immigration. What I want is for people who are not corrupt, who are well-informed about the issue, to figure out what the best level of immigration is and to set up a process that works. I don't want to see any illegals. I want to see people who come in legally. I want to see the number. Maybe it's a high number. Maybe it's a low number. I don't know, but I'd like to see the right number. I'd like us to at least aspire to it. And then most important of all, and I see this in both England and the US, somewhere along the line, we apparently decided it was impolite to ask people who wished to come to our countries, whether they liked us and aspired to be a part of our civilization. And my feeling is whatever the number is that we should be allowing in, I don't want any who don't aspire to be American. I want people who like it, who want to make the place better and want to participate in it because they see it as good. We should not be letting people in who want to destroy it. A Black man complains that he is the only Black engineer at Meta. I know childhood and college friends, as well as family, who work at Google, NVIDIA, Tesla, TSMC, Meta, Apple, etc. Every few years, when the stars align, we all manage to have a BBQ together during the holidays. They all say they can count on one hand the number of Black engineers they've ever known throughout their careers. In the last five years, 50% of the Black individuals who entered their field have had to communicate through email because they want every conversation documented, as those individuals were known to make racist allegations against people. Those individuals have been systematically fired over the last year.

Pedro Franceschi explains why Brex doesn’t hire “people managers” anymore One day Brex founder Pedro Franceschi made a list of all of the leaders at the company who worked and didn’t work. “I was trying to find what was predictive of leadership success,” he explains. “A lot of things are important, but they’re not predictive. For example, being customer obsessed is important, but there are people who were customer obsessed who were on both sides of the list.” The only trait that Pedro found to be predictive of leadership success at Brex was what he calls “the ability to operate at all levels” — someone who even at the highest levels of leadership has a deep understanding of the details of execution at the individual contributor level. What this means in practice is a CTO who is actually a great engineer. A Head of Design who can actually design amazing products. And a great Head of Sales who can actually go and close deals themselves if they need to. “It doesn’t mean that they’re going to do that all the time,” Pedro explains, “But it means that they know the nuances of what makes someone great at the craft… If you don’t know how to identify greatness because you don’t know what the bar is yourself, there’s no way to build a team that’s great.” He continues: “A lot of companies develop this role over time that people call a ‘people manager.’ They’re Director of Engineering but they can’t really code because they manage people now… And that concept is just something we eliminated. At the end of the day, there’s no way to manage people divorced from the work — you’re managing the work itself.” Pedro uses Jony Ive as an example: “Jony Ive wasn’t managing the team that designed the iPhone. He was designing the iPhone with a group of people. It’s simple, but it is a very profound change in how you orient your relationship with the work and what you put out there in the world. And I think you have to select for people who appreciate the actual output of the work and the work itself, not the process of doing the work… What matters is: Do you know what great looks like? We don't have a seller yet. However the syndicate ends up, we don't know. This is a complicated deal. Two factors to consider: Number one, we need Xi and Trump to agree they're gonna be a buyer and a seller. That's number one. Number two, we need to figure out a way to take care of Senator Cotton's concerns around the algorithm and many others who are not going to give an indemnification for using the original algorithm. We have to solve for that too. My bet, not to sound arrogant, is I will be there at the table at the end.

And acknowledge that Russia is at war with us. That bus driver in Leipzig did something every German should do, he saw a problem and took responsibility for it. And I think there are still too many people who simply sit back and say that someone else should solve the problem. Talk about these threats, what we have to do. Once we have that mindset, we can develop policies and strategies. There are technologies, not just to shoot drones in the sky, that allow us to find out where these drones came from. And then, first of all, one can point the finger at the responsible party and say that this comes from Russia. Then coordinate the police forces, military, and security forces so that they are actually present in these places.

And so the only answer to that is a functioning Congress. It turns out we do not have a functioning Congress. The House of Representatives is not representative. One of the most important organs of our democracy is not democratic. They say, "Oh, no. We're not manipulating the map to disempower black people. We're manipulating the map to disempower Democrats who happen to be black people.” So, the time has come to make it impossible to manipulate the map for any reason and just have fair maps.

You know, there's more information today than we had yesterday. They took a straw poll of all the people who went to Turning Point’s event. So, this is thousands and thousands of people, 87% of them in the straw poll said that Israel was either a top ally or an ally of the United States. On top of that, they asked the people who were there, what are the biggest issues facing the United States? Number one, radical Islam. So, when you look at what the people who were in the audience think, it sounds like they were really more with Ben Shapiro than they were with some of the other people who were attacking Ben Shapiro. There were rather clear eyed about who our friends are and the difference between right and wrong, at least as it relates to the people who were in the crowd.”
