With how bad Okinawa was and Iwo as well. The invasion of Japan would be far worse. It made dropping the A bombs easier for Truman. I will make a controversial statement those bombs saved lives, Americans/Allies and Japanese.

His description of the battle in his book is gruesome.

Reading his book having watched Pacific a few times now bring a lot of color and details to these scenes. This book is like the complete opposite of Dick Winters book. Eugene had a horrible experience and was marked for life.

He also wrote a book called With the Old Breed that's pretty awesome.

My grandpa was K 3/5 during WW2. After Guadalcanal my grandpa got out as a Gunny, had he reenlisted in he was going to Oki. Per his request 50 years later I buried his EGA in the sand on the beach at camp Schwab in Okinawa when I first got there. You should read his last book

Okinawa was a tough campaign. Every cave was a enemy strongpoint in the hilly areas.
