For people with profound autism, it is NOT a quirky diagnosis… It’s an IMMENSE challenge often characterized by stims, seizures, diapers and not being able to verbally communicate. Just because your autism or your loved one’s autism isn’t severe, doesn’t mean severe autism doesn’t exist. You can’t use your experience as the measuring stick for truth. As Josh Coleman points out, “These people should not be invisible. And if we're going to help them, if we are going to help and hopefully prevent autism someday, they need to be acknowledged and seen, and it needs to be understood that this is not a gift.”

The FDA has announced a potential treatment for autism that has legitimate studies to back it up, and it’s to do with finding out what causes it. “Autism may also be due to an autoimmune reaction to a folate receptor on the brain, not allowing that important vitamin to get into the brain cells … One study found that with kids with autism and chronic folate deficiency, two-thirds of kids with autism symptoms had improvement, and some marked improvement.”
