I was at the Easter retreat of April 2009 when Pastor Kumuyi experienced the heartbreaking loss of his dear wife, Mrs Abiodun Kumuyi. No one knew of the incident during the course of the retreat except of course for some leaders as Pastor Kumuyi continued to preach at the retreat with all other events going on as usual. We all eventually knew after the retreat when the news was made public. He went on to preach the sermon at her funeral. Pastor Kumuyi’s steadfastness and dedication to this gospel of the Kingdom continues to inspire me. At his elderly age, he stills travels different nations every now and then in order to propagate these eternal truths. What a man!

Jim Breuer says that his old friend Dave Chapelle went to him in private and told him about how an elite group of people came to him and sat him down to "correct him" and that was right before he suddenly vanished and went to Africa. He says he no longer communicated with him say in the same way after he came back and wonders what really happened... Who visited him? I'd be curious to hear the names. "He came there and he was freaked out. He was visited. And when he told me who visited him. My heart stopped for a second. I'll never forget. He went, you believe me right? They came to me..He said the names.. I said what happened? And then all of a sudden he went to Africa... But I know for a fact that he was corrected. Hey, we need to have a conversation. As a teenager, growing up in Deeper Life, under Pastor Kumuyi’s firm doctrine, I never believed this day would come - a day when another Pastor from a different church would stand on a pulpit reserved for Pastor Kumuyi and preach to the Deeper Life congregation. In our early days in Deeper Life, we believed that the mere thought of it was abominable. But then, here we are seeing it happen in full glare. Pastor Oyedepo broke the spell. Two years ago Chioma Jesus became the first Nigerian commercial gospel artist to perform at Deeper Life - an experience that sent shockwaves across the congregation, who were aware of Pastor Kumuyi’s ban on and stubborn rejection of such religious acts. What made Pastor Kumuyi backpedal in his initial religious convictions isn’t clear but I bet the advancement of social media has had an impact. The saying “If you can’t beat them, you join them,” is playing out. Pastor Kumuyi now appears ready to join and align his church with global advancement, responding to change over time. Clearly, he wants to untrap the church from the Stone Age, which he led into his unique, religious beliefs and earned allegiance from. We have a valuable lesson to learn from him.
