Even 25 years later, hearing these phone calls is just utterly heartbreaking. Hearing that voicemail is just so crushing to listen to even now. Brooke was 23. Hearing these phone calls are similar to the ones we heard from Iranian families who lost their loved ones in January 8th and 9th, 2026 that up to 100,000 civilians including kids and elderly were killed by the criminal Islamic Republic. Families were told to come and search for their sons and daughters in body bags and pay for the bullets used to kill them to return their bodies. this entire sequence is one of the most chilling moments in nikke but also one of my favorites. you can genuinely hear the pain and anger in dorothy's voice, and when rapi said that they could kill doban "together" - she shuts down and gets confused. i don't know if it was because she was shocked that rapi would agree to killing doban, or because rapi was giving her the chance to actually kill him, causing her to freeze up because she couldn't do it. at every moment she's given to kill him, she was strong and didn't do it. i think rapi knew this which is why she even suggested the idea of helping her kill doban.
