Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas on the biggest threat to the data center industry: It's not competition. It's not regulation. It's decentralisation. "The biggest threat to a data center is if the intelligence can be packed locally on a chip that's running on the device and then there's no need to inference all of it on like one centralized data center." He outlines how this could work in practice. Personalisation doesn't necessarily require on-device model training. Retrieval augmented generation, tool calls, and local data can already tailor AI to individual users. But the real unlock? Test time training. Aravind Srinivas describes a future where AI lives on your device, watches how you work and gradually automates your repetitive tasks. "Imagine we crack test time training where the AI watches tasks you repeatedly do on your local system, adapts to you over time and starts automating a lot of the things you do." The key insight: in this model, the intelligence belongs to you. It's your data, your device, your personalised AI brain. And if that future arrives, the economics of centralised infrastructure start to collapse. "That really disrupts the whole data center industry. Something feels seriously off with Claude Fable 5.1 🙄 I recreated the exact same 3D stadium I had built with Fable 5 just to see how much better 5.1 would be. Instead, Fable 5.1 took more than > 1 hour and hit the max limit 2 or 3 times on a single prompt. Fable 5 basically had the whole website ready in one shot and its output was actually much better. Fable 5.1 felt good with metal but added these weird black things that look like basket wings... genuinely have no idea what those are. Not good. And this observation isn’t just for one website. I saw similar behavior with a much simpler hero page where Fable 5.1 maxed out on a single prompt, something I never really experienced with Fable 5 for similar other websites Also, 3D models and animations of that other website also looked noticeably worse compared to what Fable 5 used to produce. In fact, they were even worse than what I’ve seen Opus 5 do. I’ll keep testing it, but so far Fable 5.1 feels less like an upgrade and more like a regression to me, tbh.

Fable 5 is BACK on AI/ML API We gave Sonnet 5 and Fable 5 the exact same prompt and same real flight dataset of 70 airports and 435 routes pulled from flightradar. Then asked each one to turn it into a cinematic 3D globe as a single HTML file. Outputs: Sonnet 5: 9.8k tokens, $0.10 Fable 5: 15k tokens, $0.77 Sonnet 5 came in 87% cheaper. It drew the routes, but the planet underneath them barely exists: a dark wireframe with the arcs floating in space. Fable 5 built an actual Earth: textured oceans, ice caps, atmospheric glow. I take partial blame along with the rest of the industry. We did not communicate the difference between a data center built in Virginia 20 years ago and what we're building now. Most data centers today don't use more water than a golf course, and so that's a huge package of misinformation. Additionally, everybody has to bring their own power. The major benefit to that is we need more power in America. Not just data centers, we need overall power. In Utah for example, I have to bring my own power and build power not only for the data center, but to give back to the community to keep power costs down. That's a major benefit. That's gonna happen across the country.

META is building 10 gas-fired power plants for its Hyperion AI data center in Louisiana. They will use as much power as 5 million American homes & pollute the equivalent of 5+ million cars on the road per year. These are the same people who tell you not to drive or run your AC because of climate change.
