I know from personal experience what it’s like growing up with a stutter. It’s hard and people can be cruel. As a boy, I would practice reciting Irish poems out loud over and over again. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but if you keep trying, it does get better. And while everyone’s experiences are different, I can still tell you that when you persevere in the face of struggle, you discover new strengths and skills you never thought you had. Those strengths will help you in many ways throughout your whole life. When I was a kid, my mother used to say, “Joey, remember: No one in the world is better than you, but everyone is your equal.” And I truly believe that.
