Even strength. Shorthanded. Power play. Penalty shot. Empty net. On this day in 1988, Mario Lemieux did the unthinkable and scored five goals, five ways.

This was his greatest moment up until he traveled to Philadelphia the day he had his final cancer treatment, and scored of course. There will never be another 66.

That’s a record that will never be broken. Just too many variables

This is one record that will probably never be broken, for all these chances to happen in 1 game for 1 player and for them to be able to actually capitalize on all of them is so extremely unlikely. The odds are astronomical.

I was there in person!!!

12 years old me was there. Best day of my life to that point. Later my parents bought me the VHS of the game for my birthday- back when yinz used to sell those. I wore that tape out! #mariomagic #goat🐐#LetsGoPens

I remember. Listened to that game on the radio Didn’t put every Pens game on tv those days. Thank God I always had Mike Lange to call all those games. It was like being there thanks to him. This one will never be broken. 🖤💛🐧#66

Greatest player of all time. Even Wayne Gretzky knows it and said it this week. #66 #LeMagnifique! 🐐

For Mario! Make sure you keep that place loud, crazed and absolutely thunderous all three periods no matter what even if we’re losing! We need this metro game badly! Keep that place booming the entire 60 minutes no matter what ! Get in their goalies head! GET LOUD, real LOUD! 🙏

A feat that will never be duplicated.
