There's this myth that goes around that all Japanese fans are quiet and polite and only react with clapping at pro wrestling events. Nothing could be further from the truth. Atsushi Onita was so damn hated in early 1999 in New Japan, he brought out the worst in these fans. Here before Masa Chono comes out to the ring for a six man, Onita hits the ring first and this is a sight to see. He is absolutely pelted with cups and everything not tied to the ground. Mitsuharu Misawa, who had only weeks earlier unmasked from his Tiger Mask II persona, defeated the established ace Jumbo Tsuruta in his first main event at the historic venue. Misawa had been wrestling as Tiger Mask II since 1984, but during a tag match against Yoshiaki Yatsu and Samson Fuyuki on May 14, 1990, he commanded his tag team partner Toshiaki Kawada to unmask him, abandoning the gimmick after six years. This dramatic moment set the stage for his rise in All Japan as himself. Jumbo Tsuruta was the undisputed company ace at this time, having taken that position after Giant Baba. He was one of the most respected wrestlers in Japan, and only wrestlers of the highest stature could earn victories over him. Giant Baba, All Japan's owner and booker, reportedly made the decision for Misawa to win on the very night of the show. Baba witnessed the overwhelming fan support for Misawa at the merchandise stands and heard the crowd chanting his name. Recognising a potential star on the rise, Baba made the uncharacteristic decision and called an audible for a last-minute change to have Misawa defeat Tsuruta. The 24-minute and 6-second contest was a masterpiece of storytelling. Tsuruta treated Misawa as a young upstart beneath him, while Misawa displayed fire, hunger, and determination. The crowd started at a fever pitch and maintained that energy throughout the match, desperately rooting for Misawa to pull off the seemingly impossible victory. After a series of dramatic near-falls and counters, the match culminated with Misawa reversing a crossbody pin attempt from Tsuruta to secure the shocking three-count victory. The Budokan Hall crowd erupted in one of the loudest reactions in Japanese wrestling history, with 70% of the crowd crying, including Mrs. Baba.

Funk literally pulled a move that Onita was well known for, and challenged Onita, even though he was with a rival promotion. He even had a check for $500,000 (yen or dollars?!?).
