I am amazed that Gavin Newsom keeps returning to this “he put on a mask and his face grew into it” metaphor. He first used it in this 2023 interview to describe how he ended up in a leadership position. He almost certainly encountered it through his wife’s documentary, which opens with it, but it originates from George Orwell’s essay “Shooting an Elephant.” Orwell intended the metaphor to serve as a warning against tyrannical authority. By donning the mask, the narrator, a colonial government official, transforms into “an absurd puppet” who wields power while abandoning his own moral judgment. If he continues, he risks having his face fuse into the mask, making it impossible to remove and erasing any remnant of the authentic self. It’s a cautionary tale against the dehumanizing effects of unchecked power. In typical sociopathic fashion, he projects his own traits onto his opponents. He pretends that JD Vance is the one who is inauthentic and has lost his moral compass, but Newsom only remembers the phrase because it resonated so strongly with him as reflecting his own approach to power.

Adapted from William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel, ‘Barry Lyndon’ follows the rise and fall of Redmond Barry, an ambitious outsider who maneuvers his way into aristocratic society. The candlelit scenes were filmed almost entirely by candlelight, made possible by ultra-fast Zeiss lenses developed for NASA. For the rest of the film, Kubrick combined natural light, hidden reflectors, and carefully controlled lighting to craft interiors and landscapes that look as if they were pulled straight from 18th-century paintings. The film’s obsessive attention to period detail (from costumes stitched using historical techniques to locations lit as they would have been in 1770), reached a level of authenticity that’s still incredible today. After months of shooting across remote estates in Ireland, and a production so demanding that cast and crew joked they aged in “Kubrick years,” the result was a vision so controlled and immersive it feels like stepping into a living museum.

Was it the NBI doing their job or Bato who ran to the plenary to have his ass covered using the Senate immunity? Was Bato in the plenary to begin with when it happened? He was OUTSIDE and chose to run into it to avoid the NBI. If self preservation means protecting the integrity, rules and dignity of the Senate, then a Senator who uses rhe Plenary as a hideout from a valid legal warrant is actually the one threatening its integrity.
