Qullamaggie on Minimum Account Size to Make A Living Off Trading vs. Trading While Working “What do you recommend as a minimum workable account size for your swing strategy? If you want to make a living, probably 500k at least. Or 300k. If you’re only gonna swing trade. But if you work full or part time, and trade part time, and you don’t need to take out money from your trading accounts, you could do it with 10k. If you double your 10k every year, after taxes, you’ll have 20k the next year and 40k the year after, 80k 160k 320k. Even with a small 10k account you’re gonna have millions after 6, 7 years. Once you get profitable. Assuming you don’t put more money in it. But if you’re gonna live off of it, you probably need at least 300-500k. Because with my strategy you’re gonna go sideways - your equity gonna go sideways for months and months at a time every year. The markets we are in right now, it’s a rare market that doesn’t happen most of the time. Right now, it’s almost too easy; everything just keeps going straight up. It’s the best time for my swing trading strategy, but most of the time, it can be a struggle.”

What you do is condition your brain to trade with smaller positions and smaller risk numbers. And when you get a good opportunity, like a big opportunity on a more liquid stock, you won’t have the confidence to take the correct size because you’ve spent a bunch of time conditioning your brain to trade smaller for no reason other reason than you can sit on your two hands and wait for a more liquid opportunity. You need to get out of the game and out of this mentality. You have to trade everything all the time; that’s not how trading works. Yes, in the past 12 months, it has worked like that, but once this main trend ends, you don’t know when it will end. It is going to end, and there are going to be slimmer opportunities.”

You know, but it takes years and years and years, and that’s really the only difference between successful traders and unsuccessful traders. Because the successful ones don’t give up. They stick with it even if they blow up. They come back; they go back to trading. That’s what I did several times. I could just I could have just given up and you know finished my studies and gone to work. You know, worked at a regular job. And now I make as much money in a year that I would have made in a lifetime having a regular job. So dropping out of school was the best decision I’ve ever made. The funny thing is most of my friends don’t really know how much; how successful I am. Like they think I’m making like as much money as I would in a normal job.”

If you know you should have been trading the solars, the EV names, or the spec names over the past six months, you probably have been trading the wrong stocks. If you haven’t at least traded some solar or speck, or EV battery names. You’re up 550% this year. Yeah, that’s good, but 40% is still good as well, though it also depends if you’re using margin or not. If you’re up 20% in the past month and a half without using any margin, that’s still good. It’s not bad at all, it’s okay. The key is to outperform; that really is the key. If the market is up 10%, you should be up 30% or 50%. That’s really the point of why we are here. That’s why you focus on these higher ADR stocks because we know we don’t bother with the slow stocks. Let the mediocre traders trade the slow stocks, the low momentum stocks, and the sectors that are not hot. Let other people trade them. We want to be where the money is; that’s our job.”
