While cleaning my arcade cabinet for the first time in a while, I also replaced the New Net stickers I had bought a long time ago for future use. If you search on Google, you can find places that make and sell arcade cabinet parts and stickers, and the quality is really impressive. They’re so good that they can even feel better than the originals 😆 Playing games is fun, but I also really enjoy the process of maintaining and customizing them.

Did you know that arcade cabinets with CRT monitors actually had three different resolutions? Most classic 2D arcade games used a 15kHz (320×240) resolution. This was the same resolution commonly used by CRT TVs and many 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit home consoles. Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. Later cabinets like Blast City, Net City, and New Net City were known as “3-mode” cabinets because they supported all three resolutions. In many ways, it felt more like an official supergun made by Capcom themselves. It even supported the Super Famicom CPS Fighter stick. A lot of people had the chance to experience MVS hardware thanks to the AES, but the CPS Changer was much rarer, so not many people ever got to see one in person. When you first connect it to a TV, the controller gives off a bit of a Super Famicom vibe, but once the game starts, the polished graphics and incredible sound immediately make it clear that you’re basically playing real arcade hardware at home.

People who started playing games after the PlayStation era probably know the company Konami mainly through titles like Winning Eleven, Metal Gear, and Silent Hill. But Konami was actually a company that created a huge variety of games, from the arcade era of the 1980s all the way through the 16-bit console generation. Their work on 8-bit consoles was especially impressive. Konami did an excellent job of adapting many arcade classics to fit the limited hardware of 8-bit systems. Super Contra is a good example of that. Back then, there was even a saying that you could buy a game just by seeing the Konami logo and you wouldn’t be disappointed. 🎮

There are definitely gamers out there who enjoy arcade games on original PCBs like I do, rather than through emulators. But authentic arcade boards are hard to find and also tend to break down over time. Seeing this demand, some incredibly talented people started creating multi-game boards. This isn’t simple emulation. Instead, it works by replacing only the ROM data on the original hardware itself, which means it keeps the same advantages as the authentic board. It may sound simple at first, but every PCB has different structures and compatibility issues, making it extremely difficult to pull off. I honestly think these are closer to works of art than just hardware projects. Of course, you can simply run MAME and enjoy almost every arcade game easily without spending much money. But people like us, arcade nerds, somehow get a strange sense of satisfaction from enjoying things in a way that’s more expensive and less convenient 🤣

If you played Capcom arcade games in the ’90s, you probably remember seeing the Q Sound logo during the opening screens. Back then, I was really curious about what it actually meant, but there was no easy way to find out. I finally understood it years later after buying a Capcom Q GrandAm 25 cabinet. Most standard arcade cabinets simply output the mono sound signal from JAMMA directly without a dedicated amplifier. But this cabinet came with a separate amp designed specifically for stereo input. Because of that, when you connect the stereo outputs from CPS1.5, CPS2, or CPS3 boards to the amp, the sound becomes much richer and more immersive. What impressed me the most was that this cabinet lets you switch between Q Sound and regular mono audio, so I could compare them directly. The stereo sound definitely feels more spacious and cleaner. But the biggest difference comes from the speaker box mounted at the top. It’s made of wood and has a much larger internal space, so the audio quality is on a completely different level compared to the cheap speakers used in ordinary arcade cabinets.

Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

As I got deeper into collecting arcade games, I eventually acquired the Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3 boards that powered the Virtua Fighter series. Unlike most arcade hardware, these systems are incredibly large and complex, which made it difficult to enjoy them properly. I’m probably the only crazy person in the world who would build something like this. 😆 I always wanted to create a setup that would let me use them more conveniently, and after years of planning, I finally built a Model board selector. Out of all the custom projects I’ve made, this is the one I’m most attached to, and it’s also the one I use the most. A lot of people ask how I built it or whether I’d be willing to sell one, but it’s extremely complicated to make and surprisingly expensive. Because of that, I’ve only ever built a single unit. I’m probably the only crazy person in the world who would build something like this.

That said, it was incredibly expensive at the time, so I could only admire it at game shops. If I had owned one back then and used it to listen to CDs and play games, it probably would have felt even more impressive than a PlayStation 5 Pro does today.

I’ve been playing games since the ’80s, but the most shocking graphics I ever experienced had to be Daytona USA. Running on Sega’s Model 2 hardware with smooth 60fps and high-resolution visuals — I didn’t know the specs back then, but I could instantly tell it looked on a completely different level from other games. And that iconic “Let’s go away!” from the opening? One line and I’m right back in the arcade. Daytona USA 2 was great too, but somehow I still prefer the original’s unique speed and atmosphere. Pretty sure everyone tried this at the arcade at least once, right? 🎮

I didn’t expect the X68000 to get this much attention. If Final Fight comes on two 2HD disks, Super Street Fighter II is made up of a total of seven disks. Since each disk holds 1.22 MB, the game runs on roughly 8.5 MB of data. The X68000 was originally designed to operate without a hard drive, so you first insert two disks to load the initial data, then swap in the remaining five disks one by one. After all the data is loaded, the game finally starts. X68000 games have the advantage of graphics that are almost identical to the arcade, but their biggest defining feature is that, when connected to a Roland MIDI interface, they can deliver far richer background music than what you’d hear in the arcade. I’ll upload a comparison video—listen carefully.

There were three Capcom games that always made me think, “Why was this never released on consoles?” Those games were The Punisher, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, and Alien vs. Predator. Thankfully, The Punisher was included in Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, so it can finally be enjoyed on modern consoles. But the other two are still unavailable due to licensing issues. Hopefully, those problems get resolved someday so they can also be released on modern consoles.

It was the first to introduce and popularize the "behind the car" third-person perspective, which became the industry standard for racing games ever since. Pretty wild - at least from today's perspective - to see ads from global brands like Marlboro, Martini or Pepsi in an arcade game. But then again, you could also smoke on commercial flights and nobody would tell you "sugar is bad" when you had a Pepsi as a little kid. Pole Position became the #1 arcade game in terms of gross revenue in 1983. No other game came close. And that's saying quite a lot, because 1983 was chock-full of epic arcade games!

Let me introduce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (arcade game), a game I had an absolute blast playing in arcades when I was a kid. Back then, Konami was making a lot of belt-scrolling action games using various IPs, and this title was a huge hit. It was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the arcade feel was recreated surprisingly well, which made it very popular. Even today, it’s still incredibly fun to play 👌
