Trump invited Chinese leader Xi Jinping to his inauguration but it’s highly unlikely that Xi would go. No foreign leader has never attended a US presidential inauguration in modern history. “Going to Trump's inauguration makes Xi Jinping look like a supplicant to Trump, because this is a ceremony honoring Trump. It's all about America first,” said Neil Thomas. “Xi would be attending to honor Trump's victory, I don't think that sits well with Xi's self-image and his political reputation in China as a nationalist strongman.” If Xi were to break precedent and attend, not only would it put him in a more subservient position to Trump, but it could also be seen as an endorsement of the democratic system. “Xi attending Trump's inauguration would certainly could be seen as an endorsement of the democratic system,” Thomas said. Some see it as Xi sizing him up, like “I know who you are,” given Miller’s hardline immigration and China stance. Others think it was just recognition or a calculated diplomatic moment. Either way, it stood out in the footage. I would have expected more of a reaction when Xi shook hands with Rubio. China banned Rubio back in 2020 for criticizing their human rights record, especially on the Uyghurs. Now that Rubio’s is Secretary of State, and they just tweak the spelling of his name in Chinese so the ban technically doesn’t apply. Then Xi shakes his hand like nothing happened. Pure diplomatic theater. Shows how much both sides want to keep talking despite the tough guy act.

the way this scene is narrated is incredibly genius: the audience can understand what Ilya’s saying, thanks to the subtitles, but Shane can’t. He only feels. And this creates a narrative short circuit where the spectator has a special connection with Ilya, he becomes Ilya, in some way, feeling all his pain, and grief and love. I would say this is one of the most emotionally intense cinematic scenes I’ve experienced on screen. Ever.
