What makes Trump’s war with Iran so particularly infuriating is the breathtaking hypocrisy of it all. He campaigned explicitly on not getting America into new wars — and then launched one anyway. Now, having done so without consulting a single NATO ally or making any case for military action, he has the audacity to demand those same allies ride to his rescue and keep the Strait of Hormuz open. He broke it. He and Israel broke it together. And now he expects everyone else to fix it. The strategic incompetence here is staggering. Going to war in one of the world’s most consequential waterways with only one partner — a partner with its own separate agenda — and no coalition, no diplomatic groundwork, no burden-sharing arrangement, is not bold leadership. It’s recklessness dressed up as strength. And yet here we are, with Trump reverting to type: all bravado and bluster on the front end, and an outstretched hand to the allies he publicly humiliated when the bill comes due. The allies he called freeloaders. The alliances he spent years undermining. Those allies. He didn’t have the decency to consult them before the first strike, but he expects their navies in the Strait now. This is the core Trump contradiction — projecting dominance while depending entirely on others to deliver any actual results. It’s not dealmaking. It’s not strength. It’s a man who confused starting a war with winning one.
