Demand Raised in Rajya Sabha to Restore Khadakwasla Dam’s Storage Capacity for Pune’s Water Security! The Khadakwasla Dam, which is crucial for the water supply of Pune city and its surrounding areas, has lost more than half of its original storage capacity due to heavy silt accumulation. While the dam originally had a storage capacity of approximately 3.75 TMC, the extensive accumulation of silt has reduced its current storage capacity to nearly 1.75 TMC. Considering Pune’s growing population, rapid urbanisation and increasing water requirements in the future, this decline in storage capacity is a serious concern for the city’s long-term water security. The impact could be particularly significant during periods of low rainfall. Therefore, I raised the demand in the House that the Central Government should issue necessary directions to restore the storage capacity of the Khadakwasla reservoir, by considering measures such as scientific desilting, watershed restoration, effective silt management, and modernisation of the reservoir. If Britain cannot create enough prison capacity at home, we should be willing to use secure overseas capacity for serious offenders. What we must NOT do is solve a government capacity problem by releasing criminals early and transferring the risk onto ordinary people. Build more prisons. Find more capacity. Get tough. Protecting the law-abiding public comes first.
