Closeout Drill has many variations we’ve worked with. The DB takes off opposite the WR and chooses any of the 3 cones as a break point. The WR must get his head around, locate the DB and closeout the space for an effective block. The yoga ball simulates the ball carrier.

This Wyatt Langford catch from yesterday is a great example of why catch probability is good to know. Just a 45% catch probability here. Why? Any MLB outfielder catches this ball if they get there. Most can't get there. Langford's jump is elite, +8.7 feet above the average outfielder. The jump is so good he doesn't even have to get up to top speed. This is just a routine double into the gap much of the time, and the TV viewer thinks nothing of it:

Focus with me on Fermin’s movement here. Look at the action from the start: even though the ball was wide on the left, Bilbao’s fullback stayed close to Lamine, which is something many teams do because of how dangerous he is. The problem is, this always creates a big gap between the opponent fullback and the rest of the defensive structure. That gap was there from the start, but Olmo didn’t exploit it effectively. Fermin, however, immediately recognizes the space and runs into it, forcing Bilbao’s fullback to follow him and completely opening the lane for Lamine to score. Fermin’s brilliant spatial awareness is one of my favorite aspects of his game.
