Really interesting & important to hear from Pat McFadden on why education needs shaking up as AI will both “destroy and create” jobs “I think that technological change makes this more urgent than it has been in the past. In some ways, I think this is government and policy catching up with the conversation that is going on among young people themselves, because they are very alive to how technological change can influence career options. “So perhaps the assumptions about what was a safe and secure job in the past no longer apply today. “I think that gives new life to the traditional trades. It gives new life to some of the technical skills that we want to prize through the announcement that we’re making today. “And the labour market is changing. This is a general-purpose technology, it will both destroy jobs and create jobs. “And if you’re a young person starting out in life at the moment, thinking about what you’ll do in the future, I think the calculations that you make about your employment security are probably different today than they would have been 10 or 20 years ago.”

For software engineering, we already have a situation where AI is better than at least 90% of humans at writing software, including 90% of professional software engineers. It really is getting to the point where it will be better than 99%, and then it will get to the point where there’s just no way to compete. It will get to what I call Stockfish level. Stockfish is a chess program that is so good at chess that it will easily beat Magnus Carlsen, or anyone, even while running on a small computer. I suspect you could probably run Stockfish on your phone and beat Magnus Carlsen. That’s how good it is at chess, and that’s how good AI will be at writing software. And that applies to everything.”

If you go back in history - every Industrial Revolution has created more jobs than it’s replaced. But it’s created jobs in countries or states that were ready to embrace the revolution. We have to embrace this change. That’s my job as HRD and education minister, to create courses and curriculum to make AP’s youth ready for the AI and quantum computing wave. I shared my thoughts at the Swaniti Global workshop on green skilling today in Vijaywada.

.Anthony Pompliano 🌪 is exactly right. while the scope of work of some jobs may suffer in the mid-term, entirely new categories of work are continuing to emerge. NEW: Elon Musk on AI and Robotics: "Assuming the current trend of artificial intelligence and robotics continues, the AI and robots will be able to do anything that that humans want them to do, but AI and robotics will be able to provide all the goods and services that anyone could possibly want. People will be able to wherever they want with their free time, work will be optional. Sam Altman recently said, "If AI stays on the trajectory we think it will, then amazing things will be possible. Maybe with 10 gigawatts of compute, AI can figure out how to cure cancer." That's a fine quote. The abundance AI promises is super exciting. But Sam is saying that AI is going to figure out how to cure cancer. And if you've used these tools today, and talked to people who are at the labs, the reality is it's much more likely that humans will use AI to cure cancer. Steve might have said: "If AI stays on the trajectory we think it will, then amazing things will be possible. Maybe with 10 gigawatts of compute, humans can use AI to cure cancer." Small tweak, but a big difference. Steve Jobs was not one to shy away from impressive specs and massive scale, but flipping the final line from "AI will cure cancer" to "Humans will use AI to cure cancer" makes all the difference. Apple under Steve Jobs put human centrality at the heart of everything they did. And we need that spirit to infuse how we communicate about AI today.
