Every major technological breakthrough has been met with fear that it would destroy jobs, and AI is no different. I’ve heard the concerns that it will replace workers, invade privacy, or do more harm than good. But history suggests otherwise. Just as the internet created entirely new industries and... opportunities, I believe AI will unlock the next generation of innovation. Think about what’s possible, accelerating medical research, delivering scan results in minutes instead of weeks, or helping build technologies that once seemed impossible. Those advances will require engineers, scientists, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs to bring them to life. Rather than eliminating opportunity, I believe AI will create new industries and better jobs and staying competitive means investing in the compute capacity needed to make that future a reality.show more

Really interesting & important to hear from Pat McFadden on why education needs shaking up as AI will both “destroy and create” jobs “I think that technological change makes this more urgent than it has been in the past. In some ways, I think this is government and policy catching up with the conversation that is going on among young people themselves, because they are very alive to how technological change can influence career options. “So perhaps the assumptions about what was a safe and secure job in the past no longer apply today. “I think that gives new life to the traditional trades. It gives new life to some of the technical skills that we want to prize through the announcement that we’re making today. “And the labour market is changing. This is a general-purpose technology, it will both destroy jobs and create jobs. “And if you’re a young person starting out in life at the moment, thinking about what you’ll do in the future, I think the calculations that you make about your employment security are probably different today than they would have been 10 or 20 years ago.”

That will be true very quickly for jobs that are digital, or really anything that involves a person at a computer or on a phone. AI will be able to do all of that very soon. For software engineering, we already have a situation where AI is better than at least 90% of humans at writing software, including 90% of professional software engineers. It really is getting to the point where it will be better than 99%, and then it will get to the point where there’s just no way to compete. It will get to what I call Stockfish level. Stockfish is a chess program that is so good at chess that it will easily beat Magnus Carlsen, or anyone, even while running on a small computer. I suspect you could probably run Stockfish on your phone and beat Magnus Carlsen. That’s how good it is at chess, and that’s how good AI will be at writing software. And that applies to everything.”

#APLeadsGreenEnergy Let’s talk about the scary side of AI. Will there be job losses? Will the entire IT sector be transformed and basic programming skills would no longer be relevant? I disagree. If you go back in history - every Industrial Revolution has created more jobs than it’s replaced. But it’s created jobs in countries or states that were ready to embrace the revolution. We have to embrace this change. That’s my job as HRD and education minister, to create courses and curriculum to make AP’s youth ready for the AI and quantum computing wave. I shared my thoughts at the Swaniti Global workshop on green skilling today in Vijaywada.
