Lakanwal, who served in the Afghan army and worked with U.S. forces, was allowed into the U.S. in 2021 under a “safe haven” policy. He was living with his wife and five children in Washington state. For the next 79 days I’ll be sharing stories of Medal of Honor recipients, alongside Donald Trump’s remarks from Thursday, 15th August. Today, I’ll highlight the bravery of Sgt. Sammy L. Davis, a Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam War. On November 18, 1967, Sgt. Davis and his unit were engaged in an intense firefight in Cai Lay, Vietnam. When the enemy launched a fierce attack, Sgt. Davis manned a howitzer, firing at close range despite being wounded by enemy mortar fire. Realizing some of his fellow soldiers were trapped across a river, he grabbed an air mattress, crossed the river under heavy fire, and brought back three wounded men to safety. He continued to fight, refusing medical attention for himself until his comrades were secure. His selfless actions saved lives and embodied the highest ideals of the U.S. Army. Sgt. Sammy L. Davis was awarded the Medal of Honor on November 19, 1968. His incredible bravery has left a lasting legacy. #MedalOfHonor #VietnamWar #Heroism #USArmy

Just minutes before the hearing commenced, we got word through a memorandum from Secretary Hegseth that the Texas National Guard has been federalized — 2,000 of them — with 400 being deployed to both Portland and Chicago. So it’s clear that this is a sort of whack-a-mole approach from the federal government: You stop the Oregon National Guard from being federalized? Fine — we’ll bring in the California National Guard. You stop the California Guard from being brought up north? We’ll bring in the Texas National Guard. So we asked the judge to issue a broad order — one that applies to every National Guard unit in every state and the District of Columbia — stating that none of them can be federalized and deployed to Oregon. She issued that order from the bench and will follow it up with a written order as well. The conditions haven’t changed in 24 hours. National Guard deployment in Oregon was unlawful yesterday — and it's still unlawful today. It doesn't matter where the National Guard comes from — whether it's Oregon’s, California’s, or Texas’s. And I think the judge nailed it. The Trump-appointed judge nailed it.
