🐘❤️ This rescue gave this elephant a second chance. Rescuers found the elephant with its trunk tightly wrapped in vines and wire. The injury was severe, and the poor animal was clearly in pain. The team carefully removed everything that was cutting into the trunk and treated the wound with medicine. At first, the damage looked so serious that it seemed like the elephant might lose part of its trunk. Thankfully, their quick work helped save it. An elephant depends on its trunk for almost everything, from eating and drinking to breathing and protecting itself. Saving it meant giving this gentle giant a real chance to recover. The dedication and care shown by the rescue team is truly inspiring. Moments like this remind us how much compassion can change a life. ❤️

Our SWT/KWS Veterinary Units exist to alleviate animal suffering. This successful operation to save a snared elephant's trunk earlier this year is a powerful reminder of the difference they make. The bull had lived with a snare slicing around his trunk for months. Left untended, it likely would have severed his trunk. His plight was spotted when our SWT helicopter was called to shepherd him off community land, into the safety of Tsavo East National Park. In the process, our pilot noticed a poacher’s snare, cinched tight around his trunk. The SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit rushed to the scene and, with support from our Aerial Unit, darted the patient. From there, treatment was swift and straightforward. The snare had been in place for at least three months, and in that time, the wound had completely healed over. Fortunately, a single snip of the snare was all it took to save the trunk. Despite the lasting damage, the bull's trunk will grow normally and he will be able to lead a full and healthy life. As snare victim Enkesha has demonstrated, even with holes or scar tissue, elephants can adapt to use their trunks to eat and drink without issue. To date, more than 3,800 elephants – including this bull – have been offered life-saving treatment by our SWT/KWS Veterinary Units. Our Rift Valley Mobile Vet Unit — operated in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service — was able to save the waterbuck from both traps. The team bravely swam out and pulled him from the water, then removed the winch snare from his neck. He was relocated to Crater Lake area where he can safely recover from his ordeal. A common challenge as the dry season intensifies: Searching for water, elephants lose their footing in mud and are unable to get back on their feet. Fortunately, this bull was spotted by a livestock herder, who immediately reported the situation to KWS. The elephant had been trapped for a night, possibly longer. Taita Sisal Estate provided a backhoe, which made its way to the remote location while our SWT helicopter flew the rescue team and equipment to the scene. Our team carefully positioned rescue straps around the elephant and secured them to the backhoe. With one steady pull, he was safely extracted from the mud and back on solid ground. Free after a harrowing 24+ hours, the bull was in good condition and walked away tall and strong. At around 1:30 AM, a man climbed a crane at a Metro construction site near Marathahalli and was unable to get back down safely. Bengaluru Police and Fire & Emergency Services quickly responded to the scene. The rescue team arranged another crane and safely brought him down. After the rescue, the police detained the individual and proceeded with the necessary legal action. Incidents like these put not only the person's life at risk but also the lives of the rescue personnel. Hats off to the emergency teams for their quick response and successful rescue.
