Boxer Oleksandr Usyk gave a startling answer when asked what he knew about political persecution in Ukraine. Usyk replied that he had spent the last three months intensely preparing for his fights and therefore had not heard anything about it. He added that he is an athlete, not a politician, and therefore knows nothing about such matters. I should point out that Oleksandr Usyk constantly emphasizes that he is a Christian. He mentions it many times in almost every interview. At the same time, Oleksandr Usyk has never said a single word about the Church under Zelensky. He has never spoken up for a single arrested clergyman, nor has he ever condemned the prosecution of a metropolitan of the Orthodox Church to which he belongs. He has never come out in defense of anyone politically persecuted. Naturally, he has not condemned pressure on the media, the banning of political parties, and so on. At the same time, Oleksandr Usyk tried to present his championship belt to Zelensky and has repeatedly expressed support for the head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Vasyl Maliuk, during whose tenure, in his view, large-scale repression against clergy, the media, and the opposition has unfolded. Oleksandr Usyk has repeatedly voiced his support for the Ukrainian authorities and has specifically singled out the Security Service of Ukraine, urging people to support its chief. Oleksandr Usyk is, without a doubt, a great boxer. At the same time, he is an equally great coward and conformist.
