APPLEBAUM: Trump is not somebody who really thinks strategically, and he reacts to whatever makes him feel, in a given moment, like he's the winner. I think Russians probably cultivate that. Russians have also been offering Trump and business people close to Trump some kind of business deal after war in Ukraine ends, if they can end it in a way that's advantageous to Russia. So, Russians are anxious to cultivate Trump in order to make that happen.

In fact, divorce rates are very high in Russia, abortion is very common, very few Russians go to church, and less than 5% of Russians have ever read a Bible. So it's not an especially religious or traditional culture, but Putin has made himself the face of that idea because it's politically advantageous. He uses it both to build support, to court, and to win over sympathizers in the West, and maybe he uses it at home as well. It looks a little bit like how in the 1930s Soviet communists also sold a vision of the Soviet Union to Americans and Europeans about how marvelous it was and how they had discovered a new kind of political system. If you've never been to Russia, Russia is a large country, it's far away, so you can imagine a lot of things about it. You can create a kind of imaginary Russia, an imaginary Soviet Union. Especially if you only visit Moscow and St. Petersburg, like most tourists do. But most of the people who admire Russia haven't even been to Moscow and St. Petersburg. It's very similar today. You have a part of European right and American right who have this imaginary Russia that they use as a symbol, without understanding that it has no relationship to reality.

He fought for the happiness, freedom, and prosperity of Russians, even though many Russians rejected him because of their own indoctrination. He understood that Russia is a wealthy country and that this money could have gone to ordinary people instead of wars. He wanted to live in a democratic Russia, without empires and without sick, senile politicians, and he fought for that vision. He was killed by his own people — killed while they were defending their own poverty.

Funnily enough, I don't think it has anything to do with conservative values. I think it's just because he likes this strongman ideal. And because he's grateful to Russians for having built his business, and maybe because he expects to do business with Russia in the future.

It is going to cause great pain to Russians, level of pain neither Russians nor Putin were expecting. Ukrainians have now figured out that they can isolate Crimea economically by ensuring no goods go in or out, because they are blowing up the trucks as they try to enter. They are also making it impossible for the soldiers stationed in Crimea to be resupplied. I think this could have a very negative effect on Russia’s ability to continue defending Crimea.

The West is betting that if it says "Russia is losing" enough times before Duma election, Russians will eventually vote as though it were true. The strategy is psychological because the battlefield has not delivered the result they wanted. Convince the public that the country has already lost, and maybe the ballot box can finish what sanctions and pressure could not (Spoiler: NO). Something Western strategists still don’t understand about Russians: they know when they are being worked. Watch FULL here:
