They are just disappointed that their target has left but then become excited when you return as they know they still have a chance of finally taking you out

Poor kitties. I always tell them I’ll be back. When I’m going to work once a week I tell them im going to work, which I hope after the past 4 or 5 years they understand to mean I’ll be gone most of the day, but I’ll be back, if I go on vacation, I make sure they see me and hear my voice every day or 2 so they know Im still around. They understand more than you think. Talk to them using the same words all the time - they understand.
