IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM DR AMBRISH MITHAL I have learnt from friends and patients that an advertisement for a drug Diofin for "curing" diabetes is being widely circulated, supposedly endorsed by me. The claim is accompanied with detailed descriptions about my research saying that I discovered and developed this drug. I wish to say that this is completely false. I do not know of this drug and I have not been involved in its development. I have never even heard of this drug prior to this episode. The post also refers to minute details of my life, education and qualifications to seem authentic. All these personal details are also false. I would like to reiterate that this advertisement is a complete fabrication. Please do not get misled. Meanwhile appropriate steps have been initiated to address this false advertising.

For thirty years the people of this country have been repeatedly told that experts are the answer to any problem. Need to build more housing? Need to invest in infrastructure? Need to manage the currency? Don’t worry! An expert committee will be formed! And yet the record of governance by experts in that time is appalling. Can you think of a part of the state that functions better under these people? Perhaps the truth that our political class fails to grasp is this: running a country is not a matter for specialist expertise, it is a political exercise. Decisions must be made that balance and sometimes override competing stakeholders, not constantly embolden them. The terrifying truth about our obsession with expertise is that it has nothing to do with the experts at all. It’s about politicians who wish to shirk the responsibility of actually governing. Fine. Some people may not know this about me but I'm a proud ambassador for Diabetes UK and have been a supporter since my diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Today, on #WorldDiabetesDay I want to join Diabetes UK in starting to tackle the negativity and stigma that people living with diabetes face. For me, it was slightly different. I was going for my fifth Olympic gold medal, there was a lot of media attention and a lot of positive stories. But for many others, it’s not like that. So many people misunderstand the condition and make judgements which can be subtle, but its effects are harmful. It’s time to change the mindset. Please check out their new campaign, ‘If You Knew’ on their social media channels and get involved 💙
