Our first test flight is just the beginning! Behind the scenes, we are focused on up-scaling and improving our technology. We are excited to announce that we have successfully tested the central subsystem of our Helix 2.0 oxygen-rich staged-combustion engine: the powerpack. We have performed two successful hot-fire tests in which we have shown steady-state operation and cavitation limits. The powerpack incorporates the turbopump and pre-burner(s). It is the most complex as well as the most mechanically and thermally stressed subsystem of a staged-combustion engine. This milestone validated key technological challenges, such as the simultaneous ignition of multiple pre-burners and turbopump cavitation performance. The results are in-line with the predictions from our design models. The closed-cycle architecture of Helix allows us to push the performance envelope further: Helix 2.0 is designed to deliver double the thrust (200kN), while mass, production technology and costs remain comparable to Helix 1.0. Stage 2 testing is officially underway at NASA Stennis 🚀 The campaign kicked off with successful cryoproof, loading the stage with cryogenic fluids and pressurizing it beyond expected flight loads to validate its structural integrity, followed by COPV manifold proof testing to verify the high-pressure system that will pressurize propellants during flight. These tests also marked the activation of A2, bringing together the infrastructure, flight hardware, ground and vehicle software, and the integrated team of test, launch, and vehicle engineers. Next up: hot fire capable assembly work, then back to the stand ahead of stage hot fire testing. 🔥

The NTSB released the security camera video showing the engine separating from the UPS MD-11 moments before it crashed. The docket also includes the inspection of the engines and in particular, engine two which showed a few performance blips prior to the crash but with recovery to commanded speeds. So, I don't believe there's evidence that debris were ingested into engine 2, instead the performance problems were related to the flames from the wing entering engine 2. Some of the footage appears to support this.
