“Everybody knows it was time.” Morning thoughts on Mike Tomlin

@gmfb Finally. A voice of reason on the national level. It's been horrific dealing with apologists who fail to realize Mike had autonomy. Every FA and draft pick had is approval and every coach as well. He was the common denominator for the entire playoff drought. It was time.

bottom line he coached 19 years and in only 4 of those years he won a playoff game. All of his true success came when there were grown men at every position that were cowhers guys. Imo, Tomlin is the most over rated coach of all time. He was suppose to be this defensive guru but his team would get absolutely smoked every year in the post season. The day he should have been fired is the loss at home vs Blake Bortles when the Jags scored 45 points at Heinz or perhaps the 12-4 season when they lost to 8-8 Tim Teebow. Honestly it isnt hard to be mid in Pittsburgh they have the best culture and organization that gives you the best tools to succeed with patience. Steelers need to let go of every old defensive player via trade/ cut and start fresh. Rip this mid Band-Aid off. Tomlin set the organization back a decade.

@gmfb They are projected to have around the 10th highest cap space. They have studs from center to right tackle on the line. Good young RBs and TEs. Harmon, Queen, Wilson, JPJ, Benton, Herbig and even Jack Sawyer showed some promise.

@gmfb You really haven’t been connected to the fan base if you think there isn’t a vocal group of Steelers fans fans AND media that are saying Steelers will regret moving on from Tomlin. I’m not one of those people, but there are a ton.

@gmfb What cap problems were you talking about? Sportrac has them at 9th in space with 12 picks in this draft and 5 being top 100. Only 2 teams needing a coach have more cap space based on that.

@gmfb Not the same Kyle that had been talking about the Steelers for the last couple of years. Yea it was time, but it’s not a mess. No cap issues. TJs contract could be the only albatross.

@gmfb I do not disagree with any of this take, except, they do not have cap issues. They have 10th most available cap space with over 39mil before they cut some obvious vets.

@gmfb Tomlin inherited a championship caliber team with good coordinators and a future HOF QB from Bill Cowher. Tomlin is now leaving a mess of a franchise to the next HC. Keep this in mind when the media says, "You see, Mike Tomlin was a great coach!" after a losing season.

@gmfb Except… the team improved dramatically as the year went on. O line in Sept demanded a quick toss offense… as a habit! Ingrained! But Art sucks so bad he never pivoted from that when they got better… & that ended the season. All they needed was a new OC.

@gmfb Agree. If he stayed for another year, Steelers would not win the North and would have a losing record. Steelers win the North this year by default - Cincy and Ravens sucked. They will be back next year. He got out at a good time
