One of the most encouraging conversations I had in Red Deer was with the Alberta snowbirds from Yuma. These are Albertans who spend part of the winter in places like Arizona, and instead of checking out politically while they were away, they helped turn Yuma into one of the most unexpectedly inspiring little hubs of the independence movement. In this conversation, they explain that their Yuma team held six pop-up signing events, and at one of the bigger turnouts they saw roughly 350 people show up, with only a handful of canvassers trying to keep up. That is not a gimmick. That is real support showing up in the middle of another country because Albertans abroad still care deeply about what happens back home. That is why this matters. A lot of people saw the Yuma story as a funny social media moment. But it is actually much more than that. It is a sign that this movement has reached a level of mainstream visibility where ordinary Albertans are no longer waiting for permission, no longer hiding their support, and no longer treating independence as some fringe theory that only gets discussed in private. They are carrying it with them wherever they go. Arizona, Mexico, Hawaii, even farther afield. That tells you something important: this idea is alive in people now. It travels with them. It is becoming part of their identity. The Yuma team also makes another point that matters. They were not calling themselves heroes. They said they were just tough Albertans who were not going to put up with any more nonsense. That is exactly the spirit behind a lot of this movement. Not celebrity. Not performance. Not paid activism. Just regular Albertans deciding to do something real because they believe this can actually happen. It means they want to be part of it. It means they can picture success. Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Konnor Griffin found his peace not in a good game, a big hit, or a strong performance. He found it in knowing who he is and why he is here. "If there were tough games, that's where I found my peace. Knowing that I feel like I'm called to play baseball, but at the end of the day, that's not the most important thing. The most important thing is living my life to share the word, share the gospel, and live in eternity in heaven. And that just brought such peace to me through the times of adversity." That is a young man who has already figured out something most athletes never do. The game is not the foundation. The game is the platform. And when the game gets hard, the foundation is the only thing that holds. Griffin also said something that cuts straight to the identity question every believer wrestles with. "It helped me kind of separate my identity from being a baseball player to being a Christian and a believer, trying to share the word." That separation is everything. When your identity is in your performance, a tough game shakes you to the core. When your identity is in Christ, a tough game is just a tough game. It does not define you. It does not diminish you. It cannot take anything from you that actually matters. Griffin is not waiting until he makes it to the big leagues to share his faith. He is sharing it now, in the minors, in the middle of the grind, in the tough games where most young players are just trying to survive. That is exactly where the gospel is most powerful. Not on the highlight reel. In the hard days. "I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content" (Philippians 4:11). Have you separated your identity from what you do and anchored it in who Jesus says you are? This is what it looks like when a young athlete gets the order right before the pressure hits. Everything and everyone matters when you’re pursuing greatness and trying to get the most out of players on a team. We are fortunate to have the coaching staff we have. The coaches put in 2-3x the work in preparation as players. I appreciate Coach Tim Walton putting the effort into these moments to create more connection with the young guys. These moments are why these young guys go out and go all out for him. There’s lots that goes into running a team. You need all coaches and players moving in the right direction. All coaches have different styles and techniques to create connection. It’s cool that this is one of them. Ohio State Football
