Yeah, humanoids are decidedly suboptimal for many applications. The ability to generalize and fit across many use cases is a plus, but in a single (or set of) repeatable tasks they’ll very often lose.

Kuka looks cool but what is it building?

Robots make a ton of sense especially for new factories, but humanoids are great because they can walk into any existing factory or workplace and replace human labor with no additional capex beyond cost of humanoid

A Chinese company owns 100% of KUKA btw.

we've had that tech for years. its super expansive, heavy, and needs a custom set up and manual programming. humanoids are not in even the same tech tree

It still boggles my mind that Germans sold their leading robotics company to China. Almost everything Germany has done industrially over the last 15 years boggles my mind. Well, at least one thing never changes: whatever weird path Germany is on, they are committed and world-leading.

Robots in the factories getting work done efficiently is something that does not get enough attention.

No, everyone talks about intelligent robots that can see the world around them and flexibly adapt. This is just another pre-programmed tool that has existed since the late 1980s.

This was impressive 10yrs ago. Kuka is no longer european btw.

humanoid robots are the ones that can machine the parts, put them together, wire it up, package, transport, assemble, install and program this industrial robot, right after building the factory around it. this industrial robot can't do that. it does its specialized task instead.

This is nothing special.

On an assembly line, it would reduce downtime quite a bit.

The robot's TCP stays perfectly still in one spot while the whole arm twists and dances around it. This is called 'null space motion' – basically the robot showing off its extra freedom without moving the tool at all. Industrial bots have been killing it for decades! 🔥🤖

just fyi: this is quite easy problem to solve in robotics via transformation matrices

every elderly person could have one installed on their entire home ceiling as an Ai assistant helping in everyday choirs. lifting, placing, cleaning, fetching, mixing, etc. could have an extra joint and be way less massive/expensive.

Yes humanoid robots are stupid, why bound robots to our limitations.

What else can it do?

programming is a hell with Kuka... and what I expect from a humanoid is to just tell it what to do and leave it to do it... like a skilled worker, but much clever, adaptive and can do all the work like a human without special expensive fixtures...

There are so many of these robots currently in place! Way more than what people realize!

Agreed, Hunanoids are just Comercial Hype, the real work is done by Industrial Robots. KUKA, FANUC etc..
