Football is such a brutal sport, things can change in a second. Arthur Okonkwo arrived on loan from Arsenal in 2023, he helped Wrexham secure promotion from League Two to League One. You can hear the fans singing for him to “Sign the contract”. This was at the end of the season in June 2024. Well, he eventually signed a 3-year contract and stayed with them. He helped them secure promotion again from League One to Championship. Wrexham signed Ward to replace him in the Championship, because Ward was more experienced…Unfortunately, Ward got injured as the season started. Okonkwo then helped them so much in the league that they almost got promoted to the premier league. Guess what? Ward came back from injury in the last 4 games of last season, the coach, Phil Parkinson benched Okonkwo. I can even say that’s why they didn’t promote, because he started to change the squad that was already doing well and sitting in a good spot for play offs. Wrexham has now signed Patterson from Sunderland. He was on loan at Millwall last season but those ones didn’t keep him. Okonkwo has now moved to 3rd choice. This is the reason he’s now being loaned to Charlton. If he does well, and Charlton does well, I’m sure he’ll get a good move because he is a good goalkeeper and he’s still 24. Again, football is brutal. Fans could be singing your name to sign a new contract today, and by tomorrow, you’re out. Football is not played with emotions, it’s a brutal sport.

Nick Dumesnil (California Baptist Baseball) has as much upside as anyone in the 2025 draft. With question marks early on about how he'd fare against the top arms in the country on the Cape, "Doomey" proved quickly as one of the best players in the summer league circuit. His hands start high with the bat coiled behind his head. While a somewhat unorthodox approach, he's able to get his bat head up and hands lowered upon loading. It's an explosive operation with elite bat speed, averaging as much as 79.9 mph in the CCBL (per @Blast_Bsbl). It's a consistent swing making hard contact and driving the ball to both gaps (led the CCBL with 12 2B). The quick hip hinge allows for a powerful on-time rotation through the ball as he barrels the ball at a high clip (up to 30.4% this summer per Joe Doyle). Then there's the speed. Doomey set the Brewster Whitecap SB record with 26 (27 ATT) in 36 G. His 96.2% success rate is the highest in league history for someone with 20+ steals in a season (per League Statistician). He gets good jumps on the base paths and good reads off the bat defensively. There is some swing and miss to his game. He walks at an average rate (8.6 BB% in the CCBL) and struck out just 12.9% of the time in the WAC but that went up to 21.7% this summer. There's some chase low out of the zone vs break and did way more damage vs LHP (.435/.469/.783; .348 ISO) than RHP (.247/.333/.337; .090 ISO). A true five-tool talent, Nick Dumesnil made a name for himself this summer on the Cape, and will soon be at the top of many teams' draft boards next July.

𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒕 𝑹𝑨𝑰𝑵𝑺 𝒊𝒕 𝑷𝑶𝑼𝑹𝑺⛑️ 𝐺𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑙~𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑡 2 😇🙏 After a botched summer assignment to a new collegiate league in Texarkana, TX that saw Grant Scholzen sleeping in his car and no host family provided as promised, Grant came home and waited patiently for a summer league call. The MGF Marshalls (who by the way is one of the best run orgs in the country, more on that in a future post!) called and in his 1st game and 2nd AB with a 1-2 count in a left on left matchup with the shadows in play, Grant took a 92 mph FB off the shoulder and into the right side of his face. The only time in 5 years w/o a face shield on his helmet, it’s the only time he’s been hit above the shoulder. Was watching the game on live stream, and it was hard to tell where it actually hit him? Grant immediately started walking to the dugout and I couldn’t figure out why he was doing that, because he should be either staying at home plate gathering his bearings or going to 1B. What you don’t see is the catcher and pitcher who are close friends of Grant’s growing up facing each other in HS and teammates throughout their CBA summer/fall travel ball experiences, looking on with what just happened? The pitcher and catcher who I’m close with as well, are in shock and the pitcher then walks into the opposing dugout to see if Grant is okay? Grant was okay, but he wasn’t okay?! That helpless feeling again when you’re not there and your son has something almost tragic happen?! I was calling friends who I knew were at the game and they said he had ice on his cheek in the dugout. After the game Grant was going to drive 4 hours home and get home at 3am to attend his cousin’s church service to listen to him speak at his 2 year church missionary farewell. He got home late as I said and woke up yesterday with his face extremely swollen and his eye already black, so we saw his uncle at church, who is a pediatric dentist and he scheduled a CT Scan with an oral surgeon buddy. Grant went in this morning for the scan and to our surprise, NO broken bones. Thank you to the countless people who text and reached out with worry and wanting updates. The baseball circle is small, but big at the same time and is a comforter! Once again his mother Heidi was working overtime to protect her kids, just like my daughter’s car accident 3 weeks ago. When it rains it pours! #SwarmingBees 🐝

So long, in fact, that there’s even a changing of the guard between Keepers looking after him. They have to be vigilant, as the other orphans tend to cluster round. He’s seven years old so, soon, he’ll be weaned off milk as he prepares for his eventual life in the wild. Remind yourself of how far he’s come already:

Yesterday, we introduced you to our newest addition, Bumpy the orphaned hippo. This was his flight down to Kaluku. He was a perfect passenger – he scrambled right into Keeper Joseph's lap and spent most of the trip chattering in little hippo grunts! Bumpy is very new to the fold – he was rescued over the weekend. His mother appears to have died in a territorial fight, likely defending her baby's life. Now, Bumpy has a family with us and a wild future ahead. This gentleman has been in the cinnamon industry for the past 50+ years and knows a cinnamon bark like the back of his hand. But, it’s his story that is amazing. He lives by himself on one of the islands located on Madu Ganga lake. He believes that cinnamon can help cure a variety of different ailments, and credits cinnamon for keeping him fit and agile at a ripe old age of 81. But, what truly amazed me was his adaptation. Once he realized that foreigners loved to visit Madu Ganga, and wanted to know more about cinnamon, he took it upon himself to prepare a “session” of sorts that gives anyone a lot of valuable information about cinnamon cultivation and the spice itself. He first welcomes you with a steaming hot cup of cinnamon tea (which tastes amazing), then shows you different types of cinnamon barks; how they are dried in the traditional way; and finally skillfully scrapes of a bark to show how cinnamon is made. He is paid by the boat operators who bring groups of tourists to his little mini island. In addition to that, he also sells small packs of cinnamon, and other tiny cinnamon based souvenirs. He also makes money through tips that foreigners leave him after the session is over. Since he has started doing these demonstrations over 15 years ago, he is now able to converse in 7 languages! Such an inspiring story, and I strive to be as passionate and dedicated as this individual is to cinnamon, to everything I do.
