There's a simple formula underneath every economy on earth: GDP growth = population growth + productivity growth + debt growth More workers, more output per worker, or more borrowing. That's all growth has ever been. When the first two stall, debt steps in to fill the gap, which grows the economy now by stealing from the future. The problem is that the trend rate of growth has been falling for decades, in the US and every developed economy. It now sits around 1.75%. The reason is the part you can't change. The working-age population is shrinking. Fewer workers means a lower ceiling on growth, no matter what anyone does about it. So the economy leans harder and harder on the one lever that's left. Debt. And that's where the real story begins.

And what that means is that all of the problems, not just with the US economy, with the economy of every country in the world, are about to get worse. And it means that the Iran war is going to go much longer than otherwise anticipated. And that is a disaster not just for Americans, but for all people. And then if you think about the effects on energy and then manufacturing, and then rates will continue to go up, and then inflation, it's a it's a calamity for the world economy with no strategy whatsoever.

Energy, especially oil, is the backbone of every economy. As I said, a stable oil price, $55 to $70, keeps the global economy running smoothly. But it’s about more than price, it’s about keeping the two-mile stretch of the Strait of Hormuz patrolled. Look at the Suez Canal and how it stays open, because it’s too important for every party that uses it. The same goes for the Strait of Hormuz. That two-mile stretch is vital, and it’s absolutely worth every dollar we invest to keep it open. Let’s build a coalition of all the oil producers in that region to keep that lifeline secure, because our future depends on it.

Yesterday on Face The Nation, I was asked if I believe I'm being treated with dignity by some of my new colleagues. What matters is how the American people are being treated -- and every bit of time and energy that is being used to focus on manufactured crises and culture wars is time and energy that is not being used to lower costs facing families. That's what I'm focused on. I hope my colleagues who are focused on other things join me in prioritizing the needs of the American people.
