It's one thing if you don’t have enough new sales coming in. You can work down the existing business, the backlogs to keep your workforce busy in the meantime until sales pick back up. No need to lay people off, just keep production and work volumes up for the time being. Companies tried to maintain their payrolls, but you can see from the ISM data all that did was accelerate the decline in backlogs right on into job cutting. It’s now the biggest stretch of weakness for services employment since 2020. And you can see how what we have right now in it is roughly equal to the first half of 2008. Or very nearly the same as the first half of 2001’s dot-com recession.
