These are buried in a system full of propaganda. Once someone falls to propaganda - anything which undermines the propaganda is avoided. When soviet citizens came to the West in the 2000s, they were amazed by the freedom and prosperity. They had generally expected to find an impoverished nation of people - all seeking to flee to the East; because that was what they had been told. Democracies do better than most. But we are all subject more or less, to propaganda.
