I think what Kirsten nails (in addition to her subtleness of acting like a 40 yo woman) is this sense of clawing and flailing - and I don't mean literally. You can sense her soul is constrained by her own body. I can feel not just her frustrations, but entrapment in her own body.

It says a lot about the direction too, like I know Dunst talked about how she'd get help from the director and the other actors about how she should react to stuff and it's truly astonishing

Her performance was so incredible. I watched the movie and I was like omg that IS Claudia. I understand them aging Claudia up for the tv show and I love the actors they picked, but some of the inherent tragedy is missing when Claudia isn't trapped in this tiny body.
