UPDATE: A convicted serial child kidnapper and molester—David Allen Funston, 64—who was set to be released from prison under California's controversial Elderly Parole Program has been rearrested on the very day of his scheduled release. He now faces new charges for an alleged child s*xual assault in 1996 . Funston was convicted in 1999 on 16 counts of kidnapping and child m*lestation for a series of horrific crimes committed in the Sacramento area between 1995 and 1996. He targeted young children (as young as 3 years old), luring them with candy or toys like Barbie dolls before kidnapping and s*xually assaulting them. He was originally sentenced to three consecutive terms of 25 years to life. However, because his sentence did not include life without the possibility of parole, he became eligible under California's Elderly Parole Program. Funston was scheduled for release on Thursday but that morning, he was transferred after Placer County prosecutors filed new charges and obtained an arrest warrant for the 1996 case.
