2027: Hamzat Well-Baked for Lagos Leadership, Says Sanwo-Olu; Praises Tinubu for Long-Term Vision We just concluded a meeting at the State House with the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, and a powerful delegation comprising GAC members, former senators, and ministers from the State. The purpose was to inform me of his intention to run for governor. We unanimously agreed that the Deputy Governor is fit, ready, and well marinated for the job. I feel truly honored by his decision to inform me, and I thank President Tinubu, who foresaw this eight years ago and told us he would see us in the long run — a vision that is being manifested today. On behalf of the Lagos State government, the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lafarge Africa PLC for the collection of non-recyclable combustible waste round the state and landfill sites, a significant step towards achieving a zero waste future for Lagos State. Through this partnership, Lafarge Africa will collect and treat non-recyclable and combustible waste from companies and Lagos State dumpsites and divert it to its Ewekoro Plant for use as an alternative fuel for production. This landmark milestone will enable Lafarge Africa support The Lagos State Govt ’s vision of a cleaner Lagos in line with the Lagos Waste Management Authority’s ambitious zero waste to landfill objective. This new agreement reiterates the commitment of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration’s to continually reduce the quantum of waste that gets to landfills, ultimately leading to zero waste landfill sites. The state government is determined to continually pay special attention to wastes conversion in the state. The Lagos State Government in recent past had also signed MoU to help decommission existing landfill, MoU to convert waste to energy, MoU with a Dutch company to take off electronic waste. We are addressing the issues of waste frontally at the states; waste sorting is a culture and it is a culture that you must imbibe and build over time; separation of waste is here to stay. The MoU's benefits are wide-ranging, including the availability of reliable alternative fuel sources, cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and alignment with ESG goals. Present at the MoU signing were the Chief Executive Officer, LAFARGE Africa PLC, Mr. Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, Special Adviser on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu; Permanent Secretaries, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji and Office of Drainage Services, Engr. It was a moment of profound reflection and gratitude to lead the Board of the ncc.gov.ng on a courtesy visit to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu last Thursday. As I mentioned during our meeting, my "PhD in Public Service" was obtained within the The Lagos State Govt ecosystem. To return now, in this federal capacity, and be received so warmly by a leader who was once my "Dean" in that school of service, is truly humbling. Our discussions reinforced the central role Lagos continues to play as Nigeria’s hub for telecommunications, innovation, and the digital economy, a position built over decades of deliberate governance and reform. This legacy, championed and consolidated under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to shape Lagos as the template for national progress. The NCC remains committed to deepening collaboration with Lagos State to ensure that the infrastructure powering our nation’s economic engine remains resilient, compliant, and future-ready. Thank you, Mr. Governor, for the commendation and for reminding us that while we serve the nation, we must never forget the soil that nurtured our capacity to serve.

The Lagos State Government through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, and the British High Commission in Nigeria are set to collaborate on the generation of energy from solid waste as well as recycling for an improved economy. Solid waste management is a major issue for the State, as the State generates 13,000 – 15,000 tonnes of waste daily. We have also identified that the PSP waste collection system needs support in finding creative ways to manage dumpsites. It is important to mention that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu -led administration has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on environmental issues with private investors on ways to generate energy from dumpsites. The State is open to investment opportunities and partnerships. It is time for stakeholders to have pure work plans and be very realistic and deliberate about actions to combat the environmental scourge. The Government would also continue to step up its advocacy and sensitisation against unwholesome waste disposal by the people. #AGreaterLagosRising The Lagos State Govt Babajide Sanwo-Olu LAWMA
